Lately, I have noticed that on the corners of Yukon's eyes his fur is starting to get stained. Has anyone else had this issue with their white husky? I have tried looking online for remedies but haven't found much. I bought the pads from PetSmart and have been wiping his eyes every day for the last week and I don't see an improvement. I have heard everything from giving them Tums, to using 10% peroxide/water mix to changing food.

Nicky had red stains bad when she was a pup, but her hair grew in and she doesn't have it anymore. I never messed with it and it just went away on it's own.

before
after

I googled a little on it and found this :

"Tear staining is caused by excessive tearing. What cases the excessive tearing is what needs to be found out or the problem may always persist. (Note that antibiotics such as Teramyacin will only work temporarily, if at all, if an infection is not the true cause of your dog's excessive tearing.) When the area around the eyes stays moist due to excessive tearing, red yeast bacteria start to develop into the staining you see. The causes of excessive tearing can be many and varied, including but not limited to genetics, health, diet, fleas, bacterial infection, ear infections, cutting teeth (in puppies), irritation, high mineral content in the dog's drinking water, blocked tear ducts, etc. It is important that your dog's vet determine the cause(s) of the excessive tearing before directing you in any methods of trying to cure the problem. Until then, keeping the eye area wiped clean daily will help and you might even consider having your dog's groomer carefully shave the area so as to prevent excessive red yeast bacteria build-up."

thanks! I didnt see it before, but I did find that on google too. I will keep an eye on it and see if it gets any worse and talk to the vet if it does. It just started over the last few weeks, so I don't think it is his food, he is on TOTW.

I used to have a maltese with the same problem (super common in them). I had to clean her twice a day to keep it in check.

hmm...I wonder how the vet would be able to tell the reason for the stains, or if it is just something that is normal. All I have been doing for it as this point is wiping them with the pads from PetSmart for tear stains.

My chihuahua has this problem too and i just use the wipes from petsmart, too, and they do the trick. I didn't use the tear stain ones though. I used the nature's miracle in between baths wipes as they were what I had on hand. Even just wiping once a day made the stains go away but if you don't stay on top of it, they obviously come right back.

Nunya gets them when he gets dirty, I'm assumign cause in the process of getting dirty he gets stuff in his eyes. Otherwise he has eye boogers pretty much everyday but so does Snoopy.

Megan, where did you read/hear that it could be calcium deficiency? That's really interesting. If it's an issue with an adult dog, I would think it shouldn't be considered normal if the dog was healthy, but then again I have no experience with it too
