Our 6 month old is entering, what I presume to be, Blow. Not entirely sure though. His shedding has doubled in the past week, but nothing like what I have seen with other owners. What should I expect when he blows? I know I could look all this information up online, but it's so much better hearing from actual owners.

What to expect? Best way to handle the massive amounts of fur? Anyway to tell WHEN he will blow? What do I do if he hates the brush? (he does)

I can't help you with the blowing part as Selena hasn't got there yet just random chunks of fur but as far as the brush...Selena doesn't like it either but I still do it every day and I will do it either when she is laying down or eating. Eating usually works better because I can get both sides! It is the only time she doesn't try to bite the brush since she loves her food and sleep lol.

My poor baby girl Kenna is completely naked, she's not only blown her winter coat but dropped her puppy coat too. It was so ready though it only took me 2 days of heavy brushing and 1 day of some detail work.

Lani- Do any of your dogs fight the brushing? Shaqua just hates it. It's not a fight anymore like it was when she was younger, but it's still clear she is very upset with me when I brush her out, she even whines from time to time. You'd think I was hurting her but I know I can tell I'm not....I'm not even pulling hard!

Some of my rescues have had some pretty major objections in the past to grooming...but those that I have raised in home from puppy don't seem to have any issues. I implement daily positive experience brushing from 8 weeks on, the grooming table has been a major benefit as well.

Hi Nicole, if you don't mind me asking how long did it took you to take out that much fur? An hour each day?

Meeka has not blown yet as she is only 4 months, but I am noticing white hair growing/coming in (she is a grey) so I assume she will begin blowing out soon.

I brush her with a furminator every couple of days and she doesn't mind it as long as I give her a dental treat. Smile. I lucked out I guess.

Furminators are terrible for huskies, they ruin the guard hairs and rip fur out. A simple slicker brush is a much better option.

Agreed, Furminators are a horrible tool for double coated breeds. Fastest way to ruin a coat is to use a Furminator on a regular basis. Now we all know better than to shave our Siberian, but the thing most people don't realize is all the Furminator is is a grooming sheer on a fixed handle. It is actually the same blade that would be used by your vet to shave a surgical site- so why are we using it for brushing our dogs?

I three the anti Furminator brushing. You would be much better off with an undercoat rake and a slicker brush. It may take a little longer, but you won't be ripping out the fur and destroying your husky's coat.

Sheba is almost a year old (OMG! affraid ) and when she was around 6 months I thought she was about to blow her coat (and maybe she did) but it was never anything major. There were a few small chunks of fur but nothing that wasn't normal. I am patiently waiting for her to get blow for the first time. I can't wait to see what her adult coat will look like. She hasn't ever changed colors, only her mask has grown out and her goggles went away.

Alex- It took me about 2 hours to get that much fur out. It wouldn't take so long but she really hates being brushed. Since you have a young one I would advise you to start the brushing routine and get your pup used to it. ( like Lani suggested)

Lani- I think perhaps I didn't brush her enough as a pup.... I brush her all the time now but she still doesn't like it. I have to brush her in parts, let her relax a bit, then continue. I was 17 when I got her so I probably didn't understand how important it was to brush her even if she didn't need it- from a training standpoint. I'll make sure to change that with my next pup.

Dakota would much rather be brushed than bathed and his nemesis is the dog blow dryer at the self dog wash ($14 they provide everything and i don't get dog hair all over my tub)

What i've done since we first got him ( 8 weeks) is think of anything that might be routinely done and done it randomly every day. In the beginning if he let me with no fuss and no bite then he got a treat.

now i can hold his paws and wiggle each toe ( this little piggie style) rub paw wax on the pads of his feet, brush him, look at his teeth, examine his ears for ear mites. Pretty much whatever i want without him getting persnickety. I only wish i had realized what a problem the blow dryer would be and had gotten him used to that as well lol.

The people in the shops next door probably thought i was killing him and if you've never had a damp 10 month old husky dance on your head, take it from me, it's not enjoyable.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Almost as soon as the mystery hair loss started, it stopped. And in it's place is gone with the grey, in with the black! He's a much more handsome pup, now. Never heard of a dog changing colors, I seem to get lucky like that though. Our Border collie did the same thing as a pup.

This pad wax? Similar to lotion I assume? I attempted to brush his teeth. That went over about as well as throwing him in a bath tub with felines.

Ha ha ha, Crystal! I bet he made a big mess trying to get away. Shaqua used to cry so much when I brushed her that you'd think I was killing her too. I wish I would have had the foresight to do what you did. Oh well, I still think she's the perfect dog. I love her. Maybe when I get her a sibling in the Fall I can do it "right" this time.... although I did something right because she's my best friend. Smile

an example is Musher's secret , and i know many people on this forum will recommend it. I like to run Dakota with my bike, we can't go for long or far yet, we're really just training him to it right now, but i use it to protect the pads on his paws from the heat and ouchy surface of the asphalt.

If you imagine trying to run fast on the side walk barefoot you'll get why it's warranted. Smile

My sister is a vet tech and i'm her venting board lol so i get to listen weekly to complaints about dogs that won't let her trim nails and stuff. I didn't want that to happen to me, it's one of those things you don't learn until the second time around. Kinda like boiling the pacifier for your first baby and just using some spit and picking off the dirt for the second one lol.

Do you guys do anything with the fur underneath the paws? Sometimes Shaqua's gets sooo long and it clogs up with dirt when she's playing.

it hasn't been an issue for us... yet Smile When dakota has been digging, which he knows he's not supposed, he normally cleans himself up pretty good. We haven't had any real snow with him yet.

When i was a child we had a peekapoo named Pippin, who was forever getting snow clumps in his paw fur. We ended up using dog rain boots on him when we took him out for walks. But he was a peekapoo and did not require the amount of exercise and outdoor stimulation a Husky does.
I vaguely remember something about cutting the fur under the paw as a bad thing but i couldn't tell you from where or when or if it's true.

sorry i'm not much help.

You should keep the hair trimmed, either with scissors or a trimmer.
