Will she ever stop peeing? Empty
PostSubject: Will she ever stop peeing?   Will she ever stop peeing? EmptyTue Feb 19, 2013 11:06 pm

Lina rescued us Sept 2012. We love her. We love her. We love her. Did I tell you that we REALLY love her? Now if only she would stop peeing in the house.

Here's a brief history. When the rescue took Lina in, she had been abandoned and tied out for, they believe, several weeks. Initially they told us that she was 3 1/2 - 4 yrs old. Hah! Two vets have since confirmed she's more like 18 - 24mos. She was underweight, her coat was filthy and damaged and her leg/hip was fractured. She spent some time in the hospital and then another six weeks with her foster mom before she came home. Home includes my husband, daughters (14 and 6), an 8 yr old pit/lab mix, a bird and a fish. Lina jumped right in and has been wonderful, for the most part. While she dominates Mysti (our gentle, shy pit/lab), they play a lot and seem to get along just fine. She ignores the fish, but does look longingly at the bird (who's kept under lock and key). Lina seems to have bonded with and we are one big happy, urine soaked family.

Our vet has ruled out UTIs and any related, physical issues. They tell us it's behavioral. She is house-trained and has put us on a pretty strict potty schedule. I'm home all day so that's no issue. However, if we do something that the little princess deems unreasonable --like tell her to stay away from the dinner table, end a play session, not play with her when she tells us too, etc..., she will look you in the eye, squat and pee. Afterward, she usually just walks away; other times, she will put herself in timeout and go into her crate. On a few occasions, she has done it in her crate. I took the bedding out and after sitting in her own urine for a few uncomfortable minutes, she cut that out. We hired a trainer to help us out. Lina sits and stays (most of the time). Lina can walk at heel (most of the time). Lina doesn't rush/charge the front door(most of the time). Training's been great, and with a lot of effort on our part, Lina agrees to follow the rules --most of the time. We had two sessions with the trainer and since that time, the peeing has gone from 1 or 2 times every two weeks or so, to at least once, almost daily. Again, the vet's tested/checked her out and says it's behavioral. The behavioralist says she's rebelling --that she's seeking control and that it's going to take some time for her to get over the fact that she cannot control the household.

What is your experience? Does this make sense? I know huskies are headstrong and don't respond well to conventional training methods, so is there something that we're not doing that we should be doing? At this point, we don't draw attention to the action. If we catch her in the act, we give a sharp, "no" and take her out. If we follow her into another room, only to discover her newly made puddle, we just clean it up. She will lay there and look at us cleaning, or she'll go to her crate.

No matter what, Lina is home. She is hilarious, loving, gentle, gorgeous and fun. We love her and she ain't goin' no where. But, this peeing casts such a dark, cold shadow over an otherwise lovely relationship. Is this gonna be forever? Is there anything we can do?

Thanks for any suggestions, ideas, comments...
(I'm new to the forum and have no idea how to post a pic of my little devil. Will post one as soon as I figure it out)

I wish I had some advice to offer. The only time I was ever in a situation remotely close to yours was years ago with my 2 previous dogs. They decided after my boyfriend moved out to start using the backroom as their personal potty area, both number 1 and 2. I would let them out before I left, be gone literally 10 minutes, and come back to pee and poop on the floor. I never did figure out why they did it, but they stopped when the boyfriend moved back in. Weird.
Only thing I can think of is perhaps she's in the teenage phase. Hopefully someone comes along and can offer some more insight. Welcome to the forum!

I couldn't help but laugh at the urine soaked family part lol!

We had big issues with potty training our girls. One even earned the nickname Miss Piss. All of our's were puppies at the time, so you're case is a bit different. I would put her either in the crate or outside while you're family has dinner. I would also get a second opinion from a different behaviorist just to see what they would recommend/suggest. If Lina is doing this just out of pure spite for not getting her way, I honestly would just stay consistent with telling her "NO" and making it extremely clear to her that going in the house is 100% unacceptable.

Just a thought, but you might also try crating her during the times she is likely to offend, like meals. Taking away the opportunity may help.

I obviously don't know the dog, and I know your behavioralist has called it rebelling, but (if it's not just those teenage years) do you think it could be out of fear? Considering that she hasn't been treated well, who knows what the old owners did when they reprimanded her? If she slinks off to a corner right after she does it, it doesn't strike me as a challenge or something.
I'm no behavioralist though. Anyway, there are many people here with experience in behavior issues. Hopefully they can weigh in.

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions, my little beast is just determined to get her way. We've ruled out fear, since she does it with family AND strangers. I did have a telephone consult with another trainer and she basically said that I am blessed with an extremely dominant female who SHOULD outgrow this behavior. It has helped sending her to her crate when we have guests. Also, we find that she exhausted by 7/7:30pm, so we place her in her crate for the night around that time. It helps. So until she outgrows this behavior, I guess I'll keep trying to gain stock in paper towels. I finally figured out how to post my avatar and signature(I'm special Razz ), so now you can see the wonderbeasts in all their glory.

Thanks again, everyone!
