How to Jog with you husky Empty
PostSubject: How to Jog with you husky   How to Jog with you husky EmptySun Mar 24, 2013 12:38 pm

So, the good weather is coming and I would like to go jogging with Ghost. Here is the problem: when I start running Ghost runs at my side for about 10 seconds and then he starts running like crazy, while I'm trying to catch up and pulling the leash for him to slow down and trying not to fall on my face.
The other issue is that after a while he just stops running full ahead and stars jumping on me while we're still running, so he can catch my hands or my forearms. I tell him "no" but he doesn't stop and then I stop running, or else I will stumble on him or lose part of my clothes Sad
Any suggestions?

PostSubject: Re: How to Jog with you husky   How to Jog with you husky EmptySun Mar 24, 2013 6:42 pm

I tried my best to run with Paw Paw, but his speed and pulling power were too much for me. Eventually he understood to run out in front of me on a Ruffwear jogging leash specifically designed to attach to my waist, but he would drag me forward on my feet. I could keep him at my side with a 12" traffic lead/handle, but my arms would get a workout and Paw Paw did not like the restraint.

I now know to take Paw Paw for bike rides, aka bikejoring, and I run with my bigger, slightly slower, German Shepherd. GSDs are more trainable, and she knows to run at my side and will not run out in front of me, nor try to nip my arms/clothing. I remember Paw Paw doing that (nipping and jumping while running) when he was younger, but over a short time he realized I did not appreciate it, and I was able to train it out of him.

Not sure how fast you run, or for what distance. I've played soccer for 30 years and run an average of 4-6 miles, up to 10 miles, a day. But yeah, I bike my huskies and run my Shepherd, that way everyone is happy!

I also thought of riding a bike but I'm afraid Ghost will hurt himself against the bike or in the wheels :S My brother sometimes rollerblades with him, but I don't consider that a good idea for me, I think I would have trouble with the braking part Razz
I read here of some people who jog with their huskies and I ask myself how can they achieve such wonder, lol

When you bike with your dog, you don't just tie a leash on there and have at it (at least you shouldn't Wink ). You get a specially designed attachment that is made so the dog cannot get hurt by getting run over by the wheels or anything like that. Attachments put them either on the side of the bike or far enough in front so they won't get hurt.

I have a Walky Dog attachment, its great. Cloud loves to run on it now that he got over his fear of the bike. I also have a SASS walking belt, its got shock absorbers in it but its a lot of fun to jog Cloud with. I take Yuki for walks on it too, but she can't bike/run yet as shes only 8 months.

I trained a command for Keeonah that I call "Pace". It's basically a gentle reminder to fall into step with me. Doesnt matter if she starts running out ahead or falling behind, If i say pace she will fall into step with me. I decided not the use the all-encompassing "heel" because there is a distinct difference between walking and running.

I took 1 dog out at a time, attached them to myself, and then I got on my bike. It took them literally seconds to figure out how to run alongside me or in front of me. I don't let them run behind me because I can't watch them. If you've seen my pic of my 2 males bikejoring out in front of me on my mountain bike, that's the gear and style we use now. I trained them (didn't take much: THEY'RE FREAKIN' HUSKIES!!!) to run in front of me and pull so I don't even have to pedal at all. They love it. We do it daily for many miles. But we do it in a place and at a time when there are no other cars, people, bikes, distractions, etc. I would never take them on a busy road where they could get hit by cars. Look up bikejoring. There are tons of videos on youtube. Also check out Digglers Dog Scootering website. They have scooters for sale for bikejoring, as well as videos of people using their scooters. Most of the people in my sled dog club train on Diggler scooters when there is no snow. Good luck!

And Paw Paw would give you sweet, soft kisses and love you back too! Haha.

He is named after Martha Stewart's old dog, Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow. I have my wife to thank for this, as I am not a Martha addict! Haha. But I also love his name.

I would suggest that the dog be on a harness, not a leash.
I know a dog is harder to control on a harness, but it doesn't choke the dog when he runs.

Also I would heartily recommend a waist belt. When you use one, your arm isn't pulled off.
And you can use your own mass to counter balance the dog's pulling.

I've run with all three of my huskies. They all pulled like maniacs starting out; then they settle down.
Look at the first picture in my sig. That's Bodhi when we start running, tail tucked under- a cartoon rocket dog.
After a 1/4 mile, he's good.

Thanks for the advices Smile I went to the pet's shop but the only attachment they had to put in the bike was very big :S I'm going to try to find another one. I saw a few videos of bikejoring like I was recommended and it looks alot of fun. Yes, I actually walk Ghost on a harness all the time, some people say it's not so handy but I personally like it more. Can't wait to try bikejoring Razz

^ epic names. GoT ftw.
As for that, i got my dog jog trained in two months (he's 2 years old) , if you can wear him out by running up hill for 2 minutes only, he'll acompany you for the rest. When he pulls too much just tap the leash a bit, make sure he is on your side , either run as fast as him ( in the begining to wear him out) or run a bit slower when he's tired. I hope i made my message clear , lol
