My husband was taking our rescue dog whom we are fostering 4-6 yr old (Northern husky) for a walk. The dog is very timid and not aggressive at all. he walks well on a leash. We have had him for about 3 weeks now. Upon crossing the road to get to the park (there is a crosswalk) The dog decides to just lay in the middle of the road NOT getting up. A car swerved and my husband was nearly killed. The leash cut through my husbands hand. (I know it was the jerks fault for speeding and should of slowed down for the crosswalk but didn't.) The dog started showing teeth when my husband tried to move him off the road, and he couldn't pick him up with the dog acting stubborn and awkward. The dog would not move, there were cars backed up honking. He finally got him up off the road and was so mad..and really fed up with this dog. One lady pulled over because she thought the dog was hit, and yelled thats a pretty dumb dog afterwards driving away.

Any reasoning on why this would happen? He was not tired by any means as it was at the beginning of the walk. My husband is never walking him again now Shocked
I am afraid to take him across any cross walk now or even the roads in my neighborhood. Some these cars do not slow down either..crazy driver's and we have no sidewalks. He is a big dog ..and has some huge teeth. We do not know him well either as he is a rescue dog. I want to give this dog the best possible life fostering, but he is making it difficult.

Wow that sounds scarey. Sorry to hear there was an injury as well.

It could be completely random and there really is not much that can be done. He certainly didn't stop because of was a crosswalk in the middle of a street, that seems unlikely.

Is it possible that he was picking up on some nervousness or tension while crossing?? I know that generally with dogs the bigger deal we make out of things the more anxiety they feel from us. I think maybe you could just try to cross crosswalks and be casual and act normal to see if perhaps he himself has a negative association that is not generated by you yourself. If he doesn't have a developing phobia already you don't want to help him create one.

Might be best to try in a less busy one at a time with little to no oncoming traffic.

Good luck.

If my dog picks up a scent on the ground, particularly roadkill, she will throw herself down and start rolling in the middle of the road. Almost like she wants the stink on her. I have to literally drag her away. Some also lay in the road because they like the heat of the pavement. Who knows what they're thinking half the time, but I'm sure it makes perfect sense to them. Hopefully this was a fluke one time thing with your boy.

Thanks Jill - I really hope it was a fluke one time thing. He is really stiff/heavy and cannot be moved when he doesn't want to be!
He did roll on the pavement looking like he was trying to scratch his back, and come to think of it a lot of small animals run from the park and cross that road where there might of been road kill.

Idk why your dog did that but maybe to prevent it. You can always cross the road like on a jog and make it real exciting. I know if i start jogging and saying come on koda lets go! In a real happy voice he gets so excited and starts running real fast wit me. Then i say easy and he starts walking again

Was there anything particularly different in that intersection? Simba does that when there are storm drains on either side of the street or when there are larger storm drains.

You could also try and take him around crosswalks that you know won't be very busy at all, and have some treat or toys (depending on what drives him), and walk through the intersection while treating him. So he could get the idea that if he keep walking, he'll get rewarded?

When we first got Storm, he would sometimes lay down when on his leash.  Usually, it seemed like he was objecting to going where we wanted him to go, or was frustrated that couldn't just run freely.  Over time it got better.
It may have been something like that at first, but yours probably got really agitated with the cars and the honking.  I suspect it was probably more general stress causing him to show his teeth than anything else. Being a rescue, it's also hard to know his background.  He may have had a bad experience or two with streets.  I know that ours doesn't like the garbage truck one little bit.  He was initially very apprehensive around horses, but seems much better after a little exposure.
