The Husky and the Havanese- question about rough play Empty
PostSubject: The Husky and the Havanese- question about rough play   The Husky and the Havanese- question about rough play EmptyFri Aug 23, 2013 3:23 pm

Hello husky enthusiasts! I do not have a husky but I am house sitting for some lovely folks who do. I have a Havanese, which is a 10 lb ragamuffin lapdog. My Havanese is very well socialized having grown up visiting Chicago dog parks regularly. Her best friend is a 250lb Rhodesian Ridgeback.

The husky I am caring for is a 2 year old rescue. She is quite sweet but I am hesitant regarding her behavior around my dog. I can't "read" a husky as well as I can other dogs. She seems to want to play and her body language does not convey any aggression, but I'm wondering if she's becoming overstimulated during the chase. My dog is quite good at letting the big dogs know "Ouch! that's too rough!"...she will let out a yelp to let the other dog know they went too far, and if they persist she will dive in and snap, not to break skin or anything, just to set a boundary. The issue is, the yelp/snap has already happened a dozen times in less than an hour and I don't feel like the husky is "getting it"...either that or she's getting it but she doesn't care.

The husky also likes to mouth your hand a lot, sometimes to the point of gnawing. I know other dogs who like to mouth your hand but generally it's a very gentle tug, whereas this girl will actually gnaw.

Overall my impression is that she lacks good bite inhibition and probably was not well socialized as a younger dog. The owners say she loves to play with little dogs at the dog park more than big dogs, because the big dogs tend to dominate her or play to rough, which is ironic considering the turnabout we seem to have here.

I'm not generally concerned about my dog with other dogs, but given the difficulty in interpreting husky language during their play, and the fact tat my dog is so little (one good bite would be huge trouble)... I thought I should ask those who have more experience with the breed.

We may be with this dog for several months (i'm potentially rooming with them as I transition into a new city) so before I commit to that I want to make sure the two can be safe friends. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
