This from my HH&MM group:
http://www.wideopenpets.com/husky-abandonment-is-turning-into-a-serious-problem/

It frosts me to see all the posts ON THAT WEBSITE about people wanting to rehome their dogs.
If you have three children under four, maybe you should have realized that your time for a husky was going to be compromised.
Sorry for the rant.
A dog is a lifetime commitment, and a husky is one X2.

Husky Abandonment Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky Abandonment   Husky Abandonment EmptySun May 28, 2017 4:07 pm

Pretty sad that so many Huskies that need to be rehomed. People really need to do their homework before getting a dog, specially when it comes to more demanding breeds like huskies. I always wanted a Husky, my sister has two Huskies and i love them .... But before i even considered getting a Husky i search for information online for nearly a month so i knew as well as possible what i was getting into. Grew up with dogs and always had a dogs myself and i really can't live without them and even if Yuka would manage to eat the roof of my house, he wont be going anywhere Smile.

One thing that makes me sad though is that Yuka's brother is living right behind us and they are first time dog owners .... They didn't do their homework from as far as i can tell and also don't know how to raise dogs as they have been asking me many questions about how to train them.
I used to walk into them pretty much daily where Yuka would play with his brother ... But the past 3 weeks i hardly ever see them anymore so getting a bit worried that they are losing interest in their puppy : /

Huskies get rehomed fast on Craig's list here but the ones that go to shelters usually are stuck there a long time because the shelter won't let people who don't understand them adopt them. Apparently no one really understands them. I don't know how many people I have met have told me they used to have a husky but it wouldn't stay home so they either got rid of it, something happened to it, or they never got another.

I actually started searching how bad the situation is here in the Netherlands when it comes to Huskies, but to my surprise there are hardly any Huskies in shelters here. Did a search for Huskies on the main shelter page here in the Netherlands where you can find pretty much every Dutch shelter dog that is looking for a home and i only got two results, one being a full Husky and the other a Shepherd mix. Did find a facebook page for Huskies that are looking for a new home which has about 8 entries a month which all seem to find a new home without ending up in a shelter. There are about 17 million people in The Netherlands and about 2.2 million dogs, so doesn't look to bad at all.

The dog breeds you see listed most over here that are in shelters are Pitbull breeds, Shepherds and Rottweilers.

Sometimes i wonder if it would be a good idea to have people follow some kind of information course before they are allowed to own a dog. I do know that next year people with high risk dog breeds will be forced to follow a course.

The previous owners of Azul were neglectful of her. I don't believe for a second that their purpose was malevolent in nature; they were simply at a loss on how to handle her. What frustrates me is that we live in an age of instant information...it would have taken seconds to find information on how to deal with her or at the very least find classes, books, or groups to help.

Husky Abandonment Empty

It doesn't matter how easy the info is to find, people won't look if they think they know better. When Rorschach was in the shelter, we jumped immediately at the opportunity, but my wife and I had been researching Huskies for years. We understood the breed and the difficulties. We like high maintenance breeds.
The people we saw visiting him at the shelter and submitting applications scared us. Families with really small children. Families where the parents weren't involved at all and weren't supervising their children's interactions with the dog. We sparked up conversations with some and found out they didn't have fenced in yards, extremely busy schedules, or their only previous interactions with a dog was with a lab when they were a child. Basically, every other family looking at this dog were ill-prepared and ill-equipped to deal with him.
This was a dog that was abandoned by 2 months, was recovering from mange, and likely missed out on the important early socialization that dogs need. And I'm watching a 3 and 4 year old tease the dog while their parents are too busy on their phones to notice or care.
We weren't 100% about getting a puppy because we weren't sure how our elderly dog would handle the transition, but after seeing the other families that were applying, we knew we had to adopt him just to give him a good home.

Huskies look very nice. They are playful and fun. They're riding high on popularity from being similar to animals in TV shows and movies right now.

The craigslist huskies in my area all look like scams. I followed them for several months and I saw all kinds of issues with the listings. They kept switching genders in the description or had size/weight descriptions that made no sense. Reused pictures. Copied text from other listings. Most of the listings for my area had out of state addresses and contact info.
I assume this isn't the case nation wide, but even so, having one uninformed owner dump the dog on another isn't much help. The overprotective shelters can be a pain to deal with, but at the same time, they keep seeing the same dogs come back time and time again if they stray from their rules.

It's a sad situation, and the victim is the defenseless dogs.

Husky Abandonment Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky Abandonment   Husky Abandonment EmptyTue May 30, 2017 7:37 pm

Oh, here it's pretty much the same when it comes to scams / backyard breeders. Knew about it before i started looking so i was very careful and was amazed by how many scam / backyard breeders are posting on sites here. The first three i contacted were scams, one even said they could ship a Husky puppy from Spain to the Netherlands for free and if i would take two puppy's i would get a discount ... The price for one puppy was 400 Euro (about the same in dollars) and 700 euro for 2 puppies .... Reported the add, but wont do much good as they will just submit a new add sadly.

So glad i actually found a good address where both parents were present, both had papers, the puppies grew up inside the home, they had a kid and a cat and another small dog. Also signed a contract for the first 2 years, that if i don't want Yuka anymore he has to be returned to them ( which wont happen because he's staying right here Smile ).

It's really sad anyway to see all those dogs in shelters, specially around summertime. The first dog i had was a golden retriever called Demie who was 6 months old when i got her from the shelter here... Her former owners made up some stupid excuses why they didn't want her anymore. They said she would go nuts if she heard their baby cry, that she couldn't be around their cats and that she would go nuts in the car.... But i found out the most likely reason why the didn't want her anymore though .. They wanted to go on vacation and didn't want to worry about having to take care of a dog.

When we picked her up we drove home with her on the backseat and she was just sitting there comfortably while looking at all the things that passed by, not even one peep from her and has always been very good girl in the car from day one, so thats one reason busted the first hour. We later got a cat, after seeing our neighbours cat sleeping right next to Demie in the backyard and my ex always wanted a cat, thats reason number two busted. Later our cat got kittens, they were climbing all over Demie without any problems at all and she rather enjoyed seeing all those kitties run around and on top of her. 2 years after we got Demie, our daughter was born ... No problems there either, she was always very sweet and gentle around our daughter and i never noticed anything from Demie when our daughter cried ... so thats number three busted as well. The only flaws Demie had was food aggression when it comes to really tasty stuff, but that was quite easy to fix and she had a flea allergy and would pull hairs out of her paws out of frustration because of the itching, ending up with bald spots. Managed to minimize that to almost zero by being really strict with flea treatments. She's been with me for 11 years till she sadly died of cancer. Still miss her because she was an awesome dog.

It makes me angry anyway too see how some people see pets as toys ... When it's not fun anymore they get rid of them. When i get a pet they stay with me for the rest of their lives, regardless of what problems they might have.

People should be smart enough to think before getting a dog, the sad truth as that a lot are not and the dog is the one who suffers because of it : /
