PostSubject: She flips out when I walk out the door.   She flips out when I walk out the door. EmptyThu Jun 20, 2013 11:07 pm

I checked the calendar and I've had Kenzi a month and two days today. I let her free roam the house for the first time today for a couple hours while I was at work and she did really well with only one mishap with a decorative vase of lighted sticks. She gets really excited when I go out the door to leave and starts racing around the house and jumps up on the coffee table so she can see out the window and watch me go. In her excitement I believe she knocked the vase over and later when she got bored of her bones they were just too much to pass up so she destroyed the sticks. If she hadn't knocked them over in her excitement I'm pretty sure she never would have bothered them since an empty sherbet container was on the floor in the recycling and she didn't touch that nor any of the other recycling. Is there anyway to help her stay calm when I leave? She does the same regardless if I'm leaving for two minutes or two hours.

Left her in the house again today but took the vases of sticks out of the room. When I came home all was as I left it. She did much better today but she still wigs out when I leave. No barking, just jumping and clawing. I wish I could get that under control. Life would be easier if I could just take her to work with me.

No destruction is such a great thing! Gus gets destructive ONLY when we try to confine him. He escapes from his confinement then goes ballastic! But when we do not confine him, he starts off calm, and stays relatively calm for some time. We have worked him up to 2hrs now. With the desensitization exercises that we do with him, I find that coming in and out of the front door a couple times before ACTUALLY leaving him makes him stay calmer for longer. Your husky sounds like she doesn't mind being alone since she is not destructive or vocal when you leave. I think the desensitization exercises would really help with her to keep her calm during your leaving routine.

Thanks! I'll try the coming in and out before actually leaving. She's used to me going in and out since I do a lot of yard work and wander back and forth. She stays decently calm during that but when I'm fully leaving she just seems to sense it. I've been trying to hide my car keys and/or picking them up at least a half hour before I leave. They seem to be a trigger. She loves to go for rides in the car and I know that doesn't help the cause.
