Should you get a female husky spayed? (Purely based on temperament/behaviour etc not regarding overpopulation please)

Hi all,

We have just bought our Siberian husky- Her name is Ariel, 8 weeks old and pure white with brown eyes. Before getting her we did a lot of reserach on the breed but it would be great to get others opinions Smile

She is settling in really well and is very well behaved for her age and is doing great with her training so far, however, we have found her to be quite vocal. Is this normal?
Also, we have contacted our vets to get her vaccinated etc and the vets have already asked us if we are thinking of getting her spayed. We haven't really thought about this and aren't opposed to either- any opinions on getting a female husky spayed?

Thanks Very Happy

If you did a lot of research, then you probably should know that yes, huskies are quite vocal. It is completely normal.

And you're going to find that the majority opinion is that unless you are trying to show your dog, then yes, you should get her spayed.

Hi,

Yes we were aware of the fact that they are vocal, I was just querying it as she is vocal about lots of things, whilst being stroked, when she is sitting there, sometimes when you are sat by her. As we expect it if we leave the room, playing etc but we were worried if this should be a sign of something or normal behaviour for them when pups- its not a bark more of a yelp/squeak?

Yes we are most likely going to get her spayed but we were just wondering on peoples opinions.

I wouldn't classify any noise my pup made when he was young as a bark. Everything was more of a yelp/squeak. Usually as a call for attention. While being petted seems a little weird to me, but huskies can be little weirdos sometimes Razz

Yeah that sounds about right and to be honest I think it could be over excitement as well but she's getting a health check this week anyway.
Do you have any tips on training? At the moment we are going down the respect route and using a puppy training kit which has a clicker but some people have said treats are good whereas others have said its not a good idea?

There are many threads on here about training. Your best bet is to read through those, as any question you may have has likely already been covered somewhere. There is a whole section labeled "Training" on the home page. You can also use the search feature, but I have found that difficult to actually find what I'm looking for.
