HELP ! Simpsons Dry Dog food Empty
PostSubject: HELP ! Simpsons Dry Dog food   HELP ! Simpsons Dry Dog food EmptyWed Jul 31, 2013 3:32 am

I am a newbie here and we will be getting our pup in estimated 4 weeks. The breeder is going to feed them Baxters puppy food which is horrible!

I have been reading through the forum and a lot of you recommend Orijen food.

In the UK this food is very hard to come by but I have found a food called Simpsons Premium. They do an 80/20 formula similar to orijen and I wanted to get some opinions if this was a good dog food. They do different varieties including a puppy version.

The information on the packet is

"Simpsons Premium Adult Dog & Senior 80/20 Mixed Fish is a totally grain-free, nutritious, balanced, complete dry dog food specially formulated for all breeds. Containing 80% mixed fish and 20% fruit, vegetables and botanicals, it is extremely palatable and contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals for your canine friend. It is also excellent for adult dogs with skin problems and allergies due to its naturally high omega 3 levels.
Simpsons Premium Complete Dry Dog Food is 100% hypoallergenic, holistic and natural dog food with a high fish content for extra palatability. No artificial colours, flavours, preservatives or genetically modified ingredients have been used. It is naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols, which are natural antioxidants.

The highly digestible ingredients in Simpsons Premium dry dog food means that you do not have to feed your dog as much, so it is very economical as well.
•Human Grade Fish sourced from the UK
•Human Grade Salmon sourced from the Scottish Highlands
•No wheat gluten
•No soya
•No dairy
•Includes Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Prebiotics and Cranberries

Ingredients: Deboned Salmon(21%), Dried Herring(21%), Deboned White Fish(17%), Potato, Sweet Potato, Salmon Oil(7.5%), Dried Salmon(6%), Dried White Fish(6%), Lucerne, Salmon Stock(1.5%), Pea Fibre, Minerals, Vitamins, Dried Apple, Dried Carrot, Spinach, Dried Seaweed, Dried Cranberry, Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin, Aniseed, Fenugreek, Thyme, Marjoram, Oregano, Parsley, Sage, Prebiotic FOS "

Any feedback welcome, good or bad Smile

Thank you in advance xx

There's a website www.dogfoodadvisor.com that I would check out and see what it says. It rates hundreds of different foods so I'd start there first. Good luck!

What are the ratios of protein/fat/carbs? They are usually listed as percentages. Smile

I found their website:
http://www.simpsonspremium.com/index.php?route=common/home

I do like the ingredients in the adult food for 80/20 both formulas.

As for puppy food, I personally would prefer to feed the Puppy Sensitive formula over the other puppy formulas only because I prefer not to feed rice or any other grain, however, the calcium:phosphorus ratio on the puppy formula seems a bit high at 1.57:1 ratio.

I did check the 80/20 Mixed formula (chicken, turkey and fish) and the calcium:phosphorus ratio is better suited for a puppy at 1.24:1 so I think you'd be OK to feed this formula to your puppy even though it is branded as adult dog food.

I'm hoping Val will chime in to give additional input on ingredients and Ca:P ratio for puppies.

While I can easily think of plenty of better alternatives here in the States, I know you don't have as good options across the pond. That said, this does appear to be a pretty decent food. The Ca:P ratios are all over the place depending on formula so depending on what you are looking to start with specifically pay attention to that. Ideally you'll want to stick within the 1.2-1.5:1 range, closer to the lower end preferably. The formulas I like the most are the 80/20 formulas but they are adult formulas. However I think you'd be okay feeding them to a puppy given their ratios are acceptable for a puppy. Bear in mind that like Orijen they may be too rich for some whereas their lower end formulas may better suit some dogs. Ultimately it'll be trial and error when you get your pup, their lower end foods are not horrible either so I wouldn't overlook them if the 80/20's don't work out for whatever reason.
