PostSubject: retained canine teeth   retained canine teeth EmptyThu Aug 01, 2013 11:19 am

Dakota was born on 2-16-13 and we just got her. Well today I was watching her chew on a bone and noticed her canine teeth looked odd. So have a quick search onine I found info on retained teeth. At just under 6 months old she has 8canine teeth instead of four. Kinda freaked me out. I have never heard or seen of this. So iI instantly went to the vet and asked. They said she may have to go in and have them removed. Came here to find out if there is still a chance of them coming out on their own or if the procedure is necessary? Is there a projected age where they should be out?  Is there any techniques than I can do to help if there is still a possibility of them falling out? Certain toys or toy tugging? The two on the top are directly behind the adult teeth and the bottoms are on the outside of the adult teeth. Is this common? I'm scared to have her put under, especially if she may loose them on her own. Have any of you had experience with this? She does not seem to be in any pain at all and the gums do not seem to be swollen or abnormal. PLEASE help me.

My little guy had the same thing for a while, and he just lost them last week at around 20 weeks. Dizzy's birth date is 3-1, so he's only a couple weeks younger than Dakota. I wouldn't worry too much about it, I think they will probably fall out on their own. He lost his mostly from playing with other dogs, and playing tug with plush toys. The other thing that helped was chewing bully sticks.

Ok thanks for the info. I have an appointment tomorrow for a check up and shots. So the vet will check and see what she thinks. Just didn't want her to jump at doing surgery too quick. She may say give it a few more months or decide she want to remove them now. If that is the case should I hold off on it or have it done as to not cause any issues in the long run. And if she does say she wants to pull them, would it be smart for me to have her spayed as well. I do not plan on breeding her. Just have my doggies to love them. I do not fear any accidents with male dogs, if my girls do run off I am right after them. Some people just wait for their dogs to return, I am not one of those. Maya likes to run through intersections and across roads with no disregard for traffic. So I fear if I let her just run she has a better chance to get hit and then not get care if needed. Would say she has only got a way a handful of times in 5 years. I have no intentions of having Maya spayed but if Dakota has to go under should I kill two birds with one stone? Do the pros outweigh the cons? And if there is any chance of her having severe complications I will steer clear. Sorry for all the questions. I just want to do what's best for my husky pups. Just asking for opinions and suggestions from those who love their dogs as much as we do.

Unless you're planning on showing or breeding her I would spay her. Here is a recent thread about spaying/neutering and timing. https://www.itsahuskything.com/t8135-regarding-spay-neuter-on-a-husky?highlight=spay If you do get her spayed, which I recommend, than just have the teeth extracted then. At this point, I think its a little early to schedule a separate procedure just to pull the teeth. She will still probably lose them. Smile

Well that was pretty simple.  Got her a tug rope.  No more than 2 mins of chewing on it I see its a little bloody and then I see her staring at the floor.  One of the bottom teeth already came out.  So hopefully the other three will come shortly.  when she wass chewing on a nylabone I could hear a loose tooth but didn't really see any that looked looser than the other.  She is still playing with that and a tennis ball so I assume there wasn't much pain.  Such a relief for me!

Three puppy teeth gone just one lower one left. She must have lost another one while I was at work last night. When I first seen it I thought I had a mutant dog since I had never seen or heard of it before. Should have just googled before I started freaking out yesterday lol.
