Meet Lola! Empty
PostSubject: Meet Lola!   Meet Lola! EmptyThu Sep 23, 2010 5:31 pm

Hi! I haven't posted in so long.. I've had a very busy summer.
My fiance, our two cats, and Kobey moved into our new home. Kobey seemed very sad, being alone, when he had grown up with two other dogs. We continuously looked for a friend for him all summer. After much thought, we decided a puppy would be best. We talked with a breeder and met a sweet little puppy, who we named Lola! She is now ten weeks old, and we have had her for three weeks.
I have quickly come to realize that Kobey was a very easy puppy to train! She is much, much harder. She can escape from our fenced in area outside, can climb over our gated area for her in the house (which Kobey will not even go over), and she does not mind going to the bathroom wherever she is. Her training is coming along, though. She is very smart. She quickly learned how to sit, give paw, lay down and stay.
The one issue that I do not know how to handle is her aggressiveness towards my cat. One of my cats hits Lola with her paw, so Lola does not bother with her. However, my young male cat is the sweetest cat I have ever seen (I guess I wish he wasn't!). Whenever she is near him, she jumps on top of him, and bites him. For some reason he doesn't protect himself, he just lays there and cries while she bites him. Some times I'll hear him crying, run in the room and she has her mouth around his neck. (This is when she escapes from my gated area for her in the house). I have tried holding both of them near each other and petting them both, hoping maybe that would do something, but my cat really doesn't like being held.
If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!
As soon as she gets her rabies shot, I will be bringing her to puppy school.. Hopefully that will help too.

Hi Jess! Good to see you back here!

Lola is just precious! I love the pic with the two of them staring at each other Smile

As for the cat...have you tried teaching her the "leave it" command? Start with a treat in your hand. Make sure she can see it and enclose your fist over it. Let her lick and bite at your hand all she wants. When she backs away from it or looks away, say "Leave it, good girl!" and then give her a treat from your OTHER hand (NEVER give her the treat you're telling her to leave it. The idea is that she's not supposed to touch whatever it is). Keep doing this until she doesn't go for the treat anymore. Then, start holding your hand open and saying, "Leave it!" when she goes for it, give a quick "Ah-ah!" or "No!" until she backs away, then release her right away and treat her. The idea is that she is supposed to leave whatever it is that you say until you release her. Keep getting further and further away, try throwing the treat at her, etc. Koda's at the point where I can leave the room and he won't touch it until I say.

My point... doing this should translate to all things. So that you can say, "Leave it!" when she has the cat or goes for the cat and she stops.

Until then though, I would keep the two separated when you cannot be watching her. She sounds like she's pretty fixated on your one cat and I would be wary of walking into a carnage scene someday Sad These things can escalate rather quickly. Even so, I would NEVER trust her 100% with either of your cats. Most huskies can't be Sad

WOW i just LOVE her and her mask! congrats on the new addition and i hope you will be around more that summer is ending and it sounds like you have all settled in. Tori's suggestion was good. our leave it command only seems to work while we are out side on walks and they try to pick stuff up.

Lola is precious I love you
sorry you're having problems with her and the cat. the leave it command is definitely a great thing, mine tends to chase the cat around the house and the cat gets annoyed and i yell leave it and he backs off immediately

Lola is beautiful! Absolutely love her mask and she does definitely look like a little tricky one for sure! Hope everything works out well for you! I am going to have the challenge of getting my husky Sora used to two male beagles in a few months.. so that will be fun I am sure!

Thank you for all of your input! I will certainly start working on the "leave it" command right away. I don't know why I didn't think of trying that. Kobey knows the command and listens right away when I tell him "leave it" when he goes near the cats.
