Possible Worms?? Empty
PostSubject: Possible Worms??   Possible Worms?? EmptySun Sep 01, 2013 8:29 am

Hi everyone! This is my first post, so sorry if I'm asking something that's already been talked about. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.

Jasper's 5 months and has had five rounds of deworming so far, with the last one being July 22. The past 3-4 days its been pouring rain here and today when I let Jasper in he had a small brown/reddish worm stuck to the fur next to his bum. It just looked like a normal worm that could have come off the grass and I can't get out to check his poop until it dries up a bit and by then I'm thinking the poop will just be full of normal worms and maggots from the ground.

Basically I want to know if "worms" that dogs get can be colored, or if they're usually white? And if its normal to de-worm again after the "puppy rounds" that he got with all his vaccinations?

You can deworm anytime. I had to deworm Mishka after he had all his shots because after giving his monthly hw treatment (which treats multiple things) found worms in his poop.

As far as worms being colored, I'm really not sure. I don't think I've ever seen any sort of internal worm being any other color than white. Hopefully someone else can chime in. Smile

I know the tapeworms my cats had long ago were white and you could find the dang things in their bed. Once my dogs poo had worms in it and the vet said most likely from insects after it hit ground. I may be wrong but I think tapeworms are the only ones we can see and the ones I have seen have been white, small, and smooth. Maybe someone else knows more.

Both roundworms and tapeworms can be seen in the stool with the unaided eye. Hookworms and whipworms require examination of a stool sample by the vet. Roundworms are white and look like spaghetti and tapeworms usually come out in white segments that look like grains of rice-but I believe they can pass in much larger segments as well. I'm betting he just had a regular old worm stuck to his butt from all that rain, but if you're concerned you can always take a stool sample to the vet just to be sure he is all clear.

Sorry for not answering back, had trouble with my email and wasnt getting notifications.

Took him to the vet to get revolution just in case, and the tech agreed it was probably just a plain worm and any parasitic worm would've been white and like you guys said, they most likely would not be that visible. Thanks!
