I read the crate training guide and nothing is working! I've been really hurt for two weeks now and she's literally been attached to me. She doesn't leave my side. Ever. However I don't think it's extreme attachment because she's fine when I leave the house. But she FREAKS if she's in her crate and knows I'm in the house. Bedtimes and early mornings SUCK. She's waking me up sometimes as early as 5:30-6am! It's this high pitched barking and it kills my head and really frustrating my significant other who has FINALLY started taking part of training and upbringing. The barking really upsets him.

And this goes for even being in a different ROOM than me. Not just when she's in her crate.

Well not much can be done about the time he/she/it wakes up, thats just their time and they are saying they want out to potty, play and eat breakfest.

be thankful you get until 5:30 to 6 am, blu would only give me till 4. my suggestion is either you (or your significant other) get up, take the pup outside let them do their business and maybe sniff around for a minuet or two. and when you come in have a stuffed kong and/or a high value toy at the ready to give them something to do while you two get some rest.

this was my own solution that i found worked for me, im sure others might have their own solutions they've found for this very predicament.

I'm having this same problem with Layla. Granted, she's several months younger than Nanook, but she does seem to have the same clingyness, even when not in her crate and my husband and I are in a separate room. Of course, we don't leave her alone for long as we have to constantly watch her in case she has to go out to the bathroom, but crate training has been equally challenging. We have to lure her in each time with treats. I have been clicker-training her and will first toss a treat in there, which lures her in, and then click and feed a few times when she stays in the crate with the door open. Then I close the door and click and feed a few times before walking away. She's usually tired at night so she doesn't make noise now and just goes to sleep.

But, during the day I sometimes have to leave the house for an hour or so or even just go upstairs to take a shower, brush my teeth, get dressed, etc. We don't want her upstairs yet because she can't hold her bladder for that long and I don't want her making a mess on our carpet, so I crate her for about a half-hour each day just so I can do those things. It's at these times during the day that she will cry and wail for a few minutes. It's not as long and hard as it used to be but it is still disheartening to know that she isn't willing to just be in her crate and be content by herself. Luckily she hasn't shown signs of separation anxiety as she has never tried to escape and has never destroyed anything or gone into a frenzy.

Same goes when she is not in her crate and we have to leave the room for a few minutes. She will stand by the gate and cry and wail for several minutes. I try to wait to come back only until after she has stopped crying. We've had her for almost three weeks now and she has not yet understood that we will always come back, though I hope she is improving bit by bit.

I do know both of her parents are pretty clingy but I don't think they whine and cry when they are away from their humans, and even then they are surrounded by lots of other dogs so they don't get lonely. Layla is our only dog (eventually we will get more), and I have a feeling if we did have another she would probably not be as whiny and clingy to us.

I would love some advice on this as well!

Is the crate in your bedroom? That helped with Loki. Then, we decided to give up one day and left his crate open in our bedroom. Everything was well, so eventually we took his bedroom crate down and he has just slept in our room with us for the last 1-2 months. Slowly he understood bedtime and now I usually get to sleep to about 8AM when I want to. At times he will still wake up to go potty at 5-6AM, but then he will go back to bed with me.

We don't let her on the second floor of our house. Mainly because the second floor is the cats domain and it's all carpeted. She still has accidents.

Same with us. Her crate is on the first floor of the house in the den. She's pretty good now about being quiet through the night, even after we put her back in the crate after letting her out to go potty at 2:30 and 5 in the morning each night. She just refuses to go in when we give her the command. I know she does know the command, as she learned it and obeyed it her first week with us but stopped after that. Now she will plop down wherever she is and not move until we toss a treat in her crate, at which point she goes in to get it. Then she'll usually lay down and I can close the door without any noise ... at least at bedtime.

During the day if I have to crate her she still refuses to go in and I have to lure her, but when I leave the room she will cry. This also occurs if I don't crate her and leave her gated-off area (den and kitchen) and go somewhere else, such as to use the bathroom. She ventures in her crate with the gate open from time to time during the day but then quickly comes back out. She never goes in by herself for more than a second or two.

Before loki was potty and cat trained we took him upstairs on leash and in his crate he went. I think it took him about 2 months of saying go to jail with treats for his crate. Now when I say "Go to jail" he goes right in without issue unless it is like 3rd time that day.

If it took Loki two months, then perhaps Layla just needs some more time. She definitely knows the command but perhaps with some more treats and coaxing just needs to get used to it.
