Help! Okami has a swelling. Kindle10
Help! Okami has a swelling. Kindle11

I went to go let Okami outside and she has this huge swelling on the right side of her nose. She is showing not a lot of signs that she is in pain. She will barely let me touch the area. I looked at her teeth in the area, nothing looks out of the ordinary, it just feels very dense on the swelling area. She keeps looking at me like "help me mom" and she is being extra sweet an kissy. The only thing i did out of the ordinary todaybwas I bought her one of those edible nylabones... i thought it would last longer than it did... she had it eaten in 20 minutes considering the non edible ones she goes through in like 2 months. I do have to go to the vet tomorrow to pick up my cat. Is this something I should worry about if the swelling hasn't gone down by morning? My other thought was maybe bee sting or spider bite. I was just hoping for some insight to help out my poor baby. Sad

My first thought was a sting or a bite. You could try benadryl. I don't know the dose off hand, but you can find it on one of the threads here or google. Keep an eye on her and take her to the e-vet if you think it's getting worse, some dogs are allergic to bees and stuff. Sorry I'm not much help, I'm on my phone. Keep us updated.

That is good news.

My dog between 60-70lbs is given 50mg benadryl 2x per day in case someone sees in future for her allergies. When she got stung near eye, er vet said use same dosage for a few days.

This morning the swelling is completely gone. I just know that it wasn't there before I took her upstairs for bed. I always take her outside at around midnight and give her some water... (been really hot, have to give her more water than usual, or she gets over heated really bad) And when I opened the crate door is when I had an oh my god moment. She just looked so miserable, and she was acting so sweet, like please help me mom! I kept an eye on her till like 5-6am... I also put an ice pack over the swell for about 20 minutes (as long as she would let me) she lost most of the swelling by 4 am. I will give her some more of the allergy meds I have later today (Children's allegra I bought for my daughter, she gets sneezy in the spring) But I will certainly pick up some benadryl to have around for when something like this happens again to her.... Thanks for the help Rhia, I am glad someone else thought it could be a buggy bite as well. I know that it is possible because I have a flower garden right next to my front door and she is always trying to eat the bees... maybe she got one this time...

Next time, please stray away from anything labeled "children's" - they often included sweeteners that can be harmful. Get a box of regular Benadryl and keep it in your doggie first aid kit.

+1 Treat to you Megan. I should have had that as a first thought, it is one of those things where common sense is the least thought of thing for a moment in pure need of it. I am most certainly going to get Benadryl, I just didn't have anything else, but I would have stuck to ice packs and keeping an eye on her, had I of thought that it would have harmed her more.

No worries, Lucy. Allegra has Aspartame, which in very small doses is fine, but many have xylitol - which is incredibly toxic.

My baby had an allergic reaction to some flea medication once and her face swelled up in a number of places. I was terrified and took her to the ER and they have her some Benadryl and she was fine. Just something to keep in mind, some dogs are sensitive to different compounds.
