I could be wrong but id feed him earlier than a hour before bed maybe. I think the main thing is you just gotta let him cry it out. If you keep letting him out everytime he cries or trying to make him quiet he will keep crying. Cause he is thinking im getting out or getting atenttion everytime i cry.. At 4 months old he can probably hold his bladder for 4 hours so id only let him out evey 4 hours and try to only let him out at those times if he is calm and quiet.

No food or water, ceep calm and everything will be fine, a puppy shoud not do business in his crate for the whole night. my 2 month puppy slept the whole night, no crying, no pooping, no peeing, she never peed in the kennel, NEVER. and i gave her food 3-4 hours before sleep time, and before going to sleep, let the puppy outside. I think that is what should keep he/she sleeping. You can also try throwing some of your shirts into the crate, cause the smell, will make him think your near him.

My puppy is 9 weeks old and just last night was his first night with ZERO noise. The first night he was with us it was quite windy/loud outside so he kept waking up. And from there it got better and better each night.

What worked for me:
+Food/water 2.5 hours before bed at least. I feed him at 6pm, and pick up his water around 7:30 for bed at 10pm. (So far no accidents at all inside the crate)
+Don't crate him away from his living area. We've had him sectioned off to one or two rooms at a time in the downstairs for potty training purposes and tried at first to crate him upstairs. Did NOT go well. Next day I sought out info/suggestions and this idea came up. He sleeps crated in the living room now and has done great.
+Never speak to him when he's acting up inside the crate. Not one word, ever. Don't even talk to those around you ABOUT him when he's crying in there. Don't give him anything through the bars. I felt bad the first few nights that he was getting loud. My logic is that this is for his learning, his safety, etc. that he can cope with staying inside the crate. If he was in absolute dire need of a bathroom break (which he hasn't been) then he would go potty in the crate. In other words, I don't mean that to sound harsh, but you essentially need to call his bluff (but ONLY if his feeding schedule has been really strict, and he's evacuated his bowels before bedtime etc. and you're confident he's simply whining from separation anxiety) When he calms down I praise him like crazy as I'm letting him out. ALSO - I try to get inside the house and quickly get him out of his crate before he notices me inside and starts acting up. Totally takes him out of the whole idea of acting that way in the first place. (Have to be careful b/c then he'll always expect to be let out first thing - could potentially be bad, but I see him as priority over bringing in groceries or whatever else I'm gonna have to do, and as that should remain that through his life, I'm not seeing an issue with this)
+Leave his crate accessible and open during the day so he can check it out, take toys in and out. Sometimes I put his water dish in the back of his crate so when he wants water, he can enjoy it inside his little house without being nervous about the door closed, etc. This point goes hand in hand with the idea of crating him in his living space.
+I'm not a professional and I haven't had personal experience with it = but I'd largely suggest not letting him have water in his crate while it's shut and you're expecting him to rest in the first place.
+I also never make a big fuss about him going in there. My routine is basically 1. He goes outside for potty. 2. We come in, I clean the mud off his paws (lol) 3. I show him a treat of some kind and then i make sure he sees me put it in the crate. 4. I tuck his back legs inside and close the door.(because he typically stands half way out with just his head inside to nab the treat (lol) 5. I then slowly/quietly turn lights off and make for the upstairs. Very low energy, no "now go to sleep, buddy!!" or anything like that.

I hear night lights can help, light music (maybe with a 30 minute timer to shut off). I tried music the first night and he seemed to like it. Hated it dead the 2nd night. I hope this stuff helps. These are ideas I've tried with dogs over the year and have REALLY worked for my new husky pup.
