| Hi there! Greetings from Regina, Saskatchewan! Here's our story of how we got this loving, sweet girl I'll start by saying that I'm NOT ENTIRELY SURE if she is a full husky!!! We haven't gotten a DNA test done, but based on her looks, characteristics, and behaviors, we are fairly certain that she is mostly, if not all, husky. This past summer, my boyfriend and I were working at a fishing camp in Missinipe, a tiny hamlet in northern Saskatchewan. One day, we had some canoers come into town with a skinny, scared, and sad puppy. They had been on a canoe expedition in the middle of nowhere, and this pup kept hanging around their camp. They kept feeding her scraps, until it was time to pack up and continue. They left her behind, and got about 2 kilometers (just over a mile) down the Churchill River, when they stopped to reposition their gear. When they stopped, they noticed that same puppy trying to swim through the reeds to their canoes. She was so desperate for food that she ran a mile and swam through the river to get to them. So they brought her back to town. She was so thin that her ribs, spine, and hipbones were sticking out, and you couldn't pet her hips without her wincing. It was the saddest thing. There is a particularly rough reserve across the lake from Missinipe, so we think that's where she came from. The canoers went around town seeing if anyone wanted to take her, and I just heard about her and said "YES!". I didn't care what she was, I just wanted to give her a home. We were lucky enough to get someone in town to de-worm her and give her all of her shots for free (they have a program where they do it for all the reserve strays). Today, Nikita is happy, healthy, and gorgeous. In fact, she's sleeping on the couch against my leg as I write this. She is great around other dogs (our roommate has two), and ADORES children. We unfortunately live in the middle of the city, but we have an awesome off-leash park here. We also take her up to the cabin every month, where she can be off-leash and doesn't wander far from us. She prefers to be up at the cabin, but is absolutely terrified when she hears the coyotes and wolves in the bush, but other than that, she loves being out there! Nikita isn't a "runner", which I find odd. Maybe its because she knows who rescued her from the wild? I'm not too sure. Her "dad" spoils her rotten, but she's our baby. The vet estimated her to have been born in March 2013. I'm not really sure what else to say, so if anyone happens to be in the Regina/Saskatoon area, I'd love to meet up for a playdate! Heather & Nikita <3 PS I would show you her, but I can't figure out how to add photos |
