Hey all -

Been training off and on with my 9 week old guy. Mostly potty training and simple things like "sit". And he's exceeding!

However, treats are the difficulty here. He'll either be bored and not want to train (understandable) or in other cases the treats simply aren't interesting to him. He was enjoying probably the 3rd or 4th brand I'd tried with him for potty, but this morning he barely wanted to take it from me and when he did he spit it out on the ground, lol!

I haven't exceeded 10 minutes a day training with him. When he pays attention he learns FAST.

Am I just simply expecting too much too soon?
Do sibes typically get burnt out on the same type of treat (and that quickly!?)
Should I vary?
Other treat suggestions?

He likes carrots, cheese, etc., but even the smallest piece takes him forever to eat. Which is fantastic but not great for training...

They said Huskies are hard to train, but they never said "why", lol...

EDIT:
I suppose my main reason for asking is b/c dog-approved people food takes him too long, and most of the "treats" I've seen in stores are filled with grains and other nonsense...

They are hard to train cause they need to see the purpose. if they don't see it, they just don't care. My husky didn't really like treats and food much, but later she loves the old treats she never ate on her puppy stage. i would try giving some small cooked chicken pieces. dogs love chicken, and i don't think pups can resist it. But don't give your dog the bones, and don't give all of the chicken at once. later your dog will get into the food and treats, and eat it with happines. Just huskies are a little bit picky Razz

My puppy does well with a small piece of fish. Well for now, he gets bored quickly so I can't use the same for long before changing. I have a bit of a loop system, I do the same with his toys, swap them around then I look great in his eyes, he thinks he's getting new toys every week.

In small amounts and occasional treats there is quite a lot of things they love:
Apple
Peanut butter
Pumpkin
blueberries

Please do your research and confirm with vet or trusted source, some human food is fatal e.g Grapes etc

Definitely have a good understanding of what's toxic to dogs, no worries there! Smile (New to my husky but not dogs in general)

Its seeming that I should just vary/increase the value of treats Smile Blueberries could prove to work well being that they're small and I can just go one by one!

Anyone else with other specific suggestions?

My pup enjoys cheese (especially string cheese, which is also convenient), beef jerky (i don't do this super often because of the salt content), maple flavored cookies for humans (weirdo), zukes peanut butter treats, freeze dried fish (dog treats), and lunch meat. I think the key is finding something she really likes at home (for my puppy I used his kibble), and something super amazing for higher distraction areas.

Be careful though, if you give too many treats you will regret it. Dizzy's nickname for a while during his puppy hood was squirt.

I love the nickname Razz When I first got Ami, he loved both rawhide bones and beef marrow bones. Gave him one or the other every afternoon for a few days...a totally amazing display of digestion run amok around his crate the first morning I had jury duty! My husband is a saint!!!!

Learning has occurred - only treats now are his kibble - fortunately his is crazy about his food.

Amazing display of digestion run amok! I think that is the most euphemistic way to describe diarrhea I have ever heard! So funny!!! My husband is a saint too, we had to take water bottles instead of poop bags on walks for a while.

Oh, another one I forgot to mention that he goes through the roof for, but is kind of icky. I get beef liver and cook it in butter with a wee bit of salt added and then freeze it. I can take out small sections and let him nibble and lick it. His eyes get absolutely huge when he realizes I have this. It makes the apartment stink to cook it though so I try to do it on a nice day so the smell doesn't linger.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, fortunately he's also into his food, so that worked well last night!
I'm thinking I'll do up some chicken for the "higher distraction" areas Smile and start with that...

My new pup will be 12 weeks on Tuesday and is crazy about cold green beans. The only other snack she enjoys is the Blue Buffalo salmon treats.

If you watch the Westminster dog show the preferred treat seems to be giant handfuls of chicken lol!
