I am currently facing unemployment at the end of March so I am looking for a new job. I know some of you have jobs that let you bring your dogs to work at least some of them time. How did you find them?

I doubt anyone looks for jobs that specifically allow dogs, although maybe it happens.

The people that I know of who bring their dogs to work either work office jobs where they are stuck at a desk or warehouse type jobs behind the scenes working with stuff and not people. Of course, working in a non-corporate pet store is probably a safe bet too. You most likely just want to steer clear of any customer service job, health related job, of jobs where you are gonna move around a lot.

Seems like your strategy to be to land one of these types if that is your goal.

I am just applying for jobs and the thought crossed my mind. A Job I don't hate that pays the bills is the real goal.

With my job it's not that I looked where I could bring my dog with me, it's that after I already worked there I found out my boss really loves dogs and was totally cool with me bringing him as long as he was well behaved. Where my office is now it's not as convenient having Mishka with me because there's too much traffic in and out of the area whereas before I was in an office where no one really came in and if I needed, I could close the door.

I really don't think it would be easy to find a job that specifically allows you to bring your dog to work with you unless it is a pet friendly business like a pet store or something similar to that.

I work at large corporation who lets me work at home 1-2 days a week. Not the same as taking my dog in but I get to be with them. Others I know usually work at smaller companies.

What would you ideally do for work?

Jeff honestly I am trying to figure that out. I know I would like an active job where I get to walk around and move the job I have been doing for the last three years is sitting at a desk and I have just spent to many hours sitting it's not healthy.

Ideally I would go back to school and get a vet tech degree, but I am not going to be in a place to do that until next winter if not longer.

I don't know I feel kind of trapped in the 20 something not enough experience for any thing other than pay check to pay check type jobs.

I just want to find one I feel good about doing like I am doing something helpful. I kind of have the middle of the work day blues.

My cousin worked for the park service and took his dog with him all the time. He started out as a park ranger and the corps paid for him to go to school and now he's one of their engineers.

I've come across a lot of tech jobs that allow you to bring your dogs to work like software or website design.

I'm a freelance transcriptionist so I basically own my own business and work from home most of the time, so of course that gives me the leeway to be able to watch Layla at the same time. However, I also do freelance video production (not as much as I used to, though) that requires me to be out of the home for varying periods of time, usually working long days. I've got a TV job coming up in May that requires me to work out of the home for three weeks for 10-hour days on average, and I'm lucky enough that the producers and the office location are flexible enough that I can bring Layla. As these things usually work out, though, the job starts right around the same exact time we would be bringing home our second pup.

Luckily the job is only for three weeks, but it's an important three weeks in the new pup's life, so while I will probably bring Layla to the job with me, I will have to place the new pup in an expensive puppy head start/day care program for that time. I'm glad the job only lasts this long, though, because any longer and I would have had to decline it. My dogs take precedence over a video production job for me at this point, since my transcription business working from home is doing well enough, and I would really rather do that because of the freedom to work from home, be my own boss and look over the household at the same time.

So, if you can find something you love to do that you can make a business working as a freelancer mostly from home, I'd go for that. Since you're interested in dogs, maybe you could look into training as a behaviorist or trainer or even a dog-walker? All of those jobs require different levels of education and training (behaviorists often have Ph.D.s or are working on them, where trainers usually require other types of training and certification, etc.) and I'm not sure what type of training you would be willing/able to commit to, but I think there are lots of options out there nowadays to do something you love to do and incorporate your dogs into it.

Are you in an area where you could do dog walking? In the right location it can pay better than some of the other jobs available.

I work in a doggie daycare and a vets office- my dogs come to both jobs with me all the time.. although, they much prefer playing in daycare compared to hanging out in the kennel at the vets office, lol. Very Happy

I work from home 2-3 days a week so that allows me to spend more time with my dogs - even if they nap a lot! I work for a big IT corporation but most offices here have similar flexibility. I doubt you will be able to bring your dog to an office environment - OH&S wouldn't allow that.
Your best bet is pet related industry - vet clinics, pet shops, grooming services etc... Good luck!

Certainly true were I work. Not at all uncommon to see a baby gate across the doorway of an office or cubicle and a dog behind it. Watched a number of these puppies up. Of course, you need a degree in CS or Engineering.
