| Hello everyone! Lookin for some help
Today at our huskies check up, the vet noticed that one of his eyes were white in his pupils. His other eye was just fine. Blue eyes with blackish/reddish pupil. I'm not sure exactly how to explain this but when u look close enough u can definitely notice a whitish/grayish color in his eye. The vet wasn't sure what it meant and confirmed he's not blind and can see just fine. She's going to give us some info for an eye specialist to have them look and see what it might be.
Any of your huskies have this problem or issue in their eyes/eye? Is it something serious or just something unique with our sibe? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Again I'm not sure if I describe what I'm talking about well enough so if u have any questions feel free to ask! Thanks! |

| It sounds like a perfect description of a cataract, which is one of the most prevalent genetic health problems in the breed.
How old is your dog?
Did the vet mention cataracts?
Did you get your Husky from a breeder? If so, you should let him or her know about this problem especially if your dog is young. |

| Thanks for responding so quickly!
We got him from a rescue shelter about 6-8 months ago
He is anywhere from 2-3 yrs old (they wernt exactly sure of his age at the rescue, this is just based on his teeth)
The vet did mention cataracts but says she dosent THINK it can be that but might be a chance. She wasn't very sure so that's why she's gonna refer an eye specialist
If it is cataracts, how is that treated and how does it affect our sibe? Is it serious for his age/common for his age? |

| No problem.
Well hopefully they can get some conclusive results from tests. Again, cataracts are common in the breed (probably the most warned against health issue in fact), especially in dogs who come from breeders or mills who don't do health checks before breeding. It is likely your buddy came from this type of background if he was a rescue.
I am not sure how it is treated. Hopefully somebody else will chime in. But in general, cataracts create blind spots in the overall field of vision. For example, I have one that I was born with dead center of my pupil. So there, in the center, I have a blind spot, but because it is dead center it is actually not noticeable for me as the rest of my field of vision just sees "around" it, if you will.
But, if it is off center, say right of center or higher than center, then that will create a significant gap in the field of vision that will create vision problems.
I know too that some cataracts change in size and shape while some, like my personal one, stay constant in shape and size.
The seriousness of it will depend on what I just typed above. These type of genetic issues usually show up after the age of 2, as does hip dysplasia in most cases which is why they don't check for it in dogs younger than 2.
I do know that health tested Huskies can get checked for cataracts sooner than for hip dysplasia which means that if it is present it usually manifests itself earlier in life, I would imagine.
Good luck and keep us posted.
It could be a number of things I'm sure but it sounds like a cataract to me personally. |

| Is the vet sure it wasn't the cornea? Corneal dystrophy gives a whitish look too and often doesn't affect eyesight. |

| Corneal Dystrophy- Progressive Retinal Atrophy- Cataracts- Basically you'll need to seek out an ACVO veterinarian to get a firm diagnosis. All three of these eye disorders cause white cloudiness in the eye and are hereditary. |
