sun burn?? Empty
PostSubject: sun burn??    sun burn?? EmptyThu Jun 12, 2014 5:32 am

My dog Nova is a white husky samoyed mix. She has had small patches on her nose, ear, and under eye lose a little fur and look red, almost like a sun burn. However the inner ear was flakey. I've gone to the vet numerous times and spent a lot of money. It isn't mites and the vet thinks maybe it's allergies, or possibly sun burn (however he said not likely). Everything has healed up now except for her nose. It has gotten worse actually. I use sun screen on her but it doesn't seem it to really make a difference. The spots also don't seen to bother her at all. She is also 10 months old. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I am very worried!

I haven't had any experience in what you are going through with Nova. However, if it is a burn my best advice would be to put Neosporin on it. When you apply Neosporin make sure you monitor Nova, so that she wont lick it off. If she licks it off, then the Neosporin wont work. Its hard to give you good advice because I do not know what it looks like. If you post a picture I would gladly send it to my uncle who is a vet and maybe he could tell me what you could do.

I just spoke to my uncle and since he doesn't have a picture to go on. He just told me that Neosporin wouldn't really do much. However, you can put white vinegar or apple cider vinegar and that would have an affect. He said to dab it on her nose and make sure it does not get in her eyes. You can also mix some water in it that way it wont be too strong. I hope that helps!

NovaShow, without pictures it is hard to know what Nova is suffering from. Although, it does sound a lot like what Kodabear had going on between January and March of this year. He had patches on the back side of both ears and a large patch on the top of his muzzle that was flaky and missing fur.

My vet suggested he was deficient in zinc and did a blood test to check his level of zinc. It was low. We already were feeding TOTW Salmon however, most dog foods do not have enough zinc in them to take care of a deficiency in zinc.

We started him on Nutrazinc from www.howlingdogalaska.com and a topical ointment solid gold. Within 8 weeks he was completely healed.

We have continued to supplement just with the Nutrazinc that is placed in his food morning and night. I have read up that they can have flare ups when they are stressed or preparing for their bi-annual blow of their coat.

Please be advised that you should not supplement with any zinc until you are sure there is a deficiency because it can be toxic, if they do not need the zinc.

Hope this helps. Keep us updated.

So sorry for late reply!! I've been meaning to post picture but have put it off because I didn't know how to on my phone. Unfortunately, I still don't know and have tried to figure it out (I am using phone, that's probably why) but novas patches have cleared up. Sometimes they'll flare up but not nearly as bad as before. If we are in sun I always rub in sun screen. It's strange too because it's summer here in SoCal where I thought it would be worse but it has gotten so much better on it's own. I'm still keeping close eye every day on it though. Thanks so much for advice! Also in respondence to a question, we did do skin scrapping but nothing was found.
