Advice for moving from House with yard to Apartment Empty
PostSubject: Advice for moving from House with yard to Apartment   Advice for moving from House with yard to Apartment EmptyFri Aug 15, 2014 5:33 pm

So as most have you have heard by now, we are moving to Colorado! For as long as we have had Bode we have lived in a house with a yard but now will be moving to an apartment. I know that the yard is really more of a convenience for us as more of an easy out to go potty as opposed to a real necessity. The majority of his exercise comes from playdates, walks, and runs. He has never been one to just play with us in the yard unless another dog is involved. So I know it's going to suck for us at first getting used to having to take him out on a leash every time he has to go potty and he is going to have to get used to the fact that he can't just go out any time he feels like it.

I am more worried about the shared walls and the famous husky vocalizations. He loves to talk to us when we get home from work, when he wants something, when he's being a turd, etc...You all know what I'm talking about. And then there's the zoomies and playing rough in the house. We've never had to worry about bothering neighbors before with this, but I'm concerned about the close proximity living and getting complaints. Especially since Bode is not so good at the "Quiet" command  Laughing

Any helpful advice, words of wisdom, or experiences?

Hey Sara! I am really sad you are moving, I know we only got to hang once, but I hope you go to the meet on the 30th so me and Okami can say bye to you and Bode Smile

I don't really have too much advice since I don't live in an apartment, but I do live somewhere with no fenced in yard, however my yard is huge though lol.

I mean for the apartment bit, I would say talk to your surrounding neighbors when you get there, get to know their like, pretty much figure out if any of them would have an issue with Bode. And try to tire Bode out before said person's(s') schedule of when they would want quiet time. However a lot of apartments these days are built pretty well to cancel out noise as much as possible. For your direct downstairs neighbor you could always put throw rugs over the current flooring to give extra padding for zoomies.

I mean having no yard isn't really a huge difference than having one. As you said it is just convenience. It will just take a little extra work to tire him out. Maybe go to a dog park often times a week to give him the yard feeling, more playdates, a little longer walks/runs. You should be just fine though Smile

Oh wow! Colorado bound! I wish I could say the same thing... I miss it out there so much. I am sure the only thing that keeps me wanting to go back is all the memories from the mountains. There is nothing like it, and nothing can ever replace the awesome Rocky Mountains. When you do go up in the mountains, some good places... Wellington Lake, Turkey Creek, Gold Dust Mountain (it is very shiny hehe), Pike's Peak, Mt. Evens. And there is a Rainbow Trout pond (you pay per fish you catch) that have the largest Rainbow Trout in the state! Good eating. Smile .... Just so many amazing things to do out there.

Sara,

Congrats!! I also don't live close to people. I'm with Lucy, introduce yourselves and Bode, get a feel for their quiet times. Who on earth couldn't resist the charms and smartness of a husky, lol. Carpeting works great for reducing noise, if you can figure out a way to not damage walls, you can do that as well. I am blessed with a pretty laid back husky after dark. My husband goes to bed around 9 pm, and she knows it's "bed time", tiring her out prior has been key for us. She rarely makes a peep after hubby goes to bed. So in theory we could have neighbors with out issues. I wish you the very best of luck. Life is an adventure, enjoy the ride!!

Get him on a schedule. It will keep you from hating life if you let him go out whenever he feels like it. We live in an apartment and have it down to a science. Anya goes out 4x a day, and that's it. She every blue moon will ask to go out an extra time, but only if she's eaten something new (a bone, for instance) and her system is off. Otherwise, she's happy with our routine.

5:30 am: we get up, she eats breakfast, we go for our long walk of the day (an hour)
6:30-12:00: she naps and lays around
12:00: I come home from work, we go on a half hour walk
12:30-6:00: she chills out
6:00: I come home, dinner, half hour walk, then some play time
7:00-10:00: Anya chills out while I watch TV, play on the computer, etch
10:00: last walk before bed!
10:30-5:30: sleepytime!

Anya knows her schedule like clockwork. 2.5 hours of walks (split between my husband and I) keeps the talking and zombies at bay, and she really thrives on routine.

Yeah, getting him on a schedule definitely sounds like it will be the best option. Thanks for sharing!
