Anyone in florida? Empty
PostSubject: Anyone in florida?   Anyone in florida? EmptySat Jul 26, 2014 3:45 pm

Thats right is anyone on here in florida either in the St augustine area or daytona beach area? Deeva needs a playmate once in awhile and I would like to introduce her and socialize her with other huskies at least once a week. We changed the spelling of her name to be a little bit different but cant figure out how to change the username on here lol. on wednesday she is going to Banfield to get her welness checkup and plan started so that we canget all her shots taken care of. We got her off craigslist and something seems a little off about her, dont get me wrong i love her, but shes very very finnicky with men and were a gay couple, she doesnt like my partner that much but she listens to me pretty well, after three days she already knows how to sit, crate training is getting better and shes only slept with us in bed for one night just to calm her down. We live in a duplex and her screaming (not whining, screaming) annoys our neighboors so any advice is helpful, ive already spent a substantial amount at petsmart on toys and training aids to assist in the screaming, but so far only the squirt bottle works, i hope that doesnt sound cruel, i have had 6 huskies since i was a child and she has been the most stubborn.

I feel as though i rescued her from a bad household, they told us they got her at 3 weeks from a friend, and they both worked 60 hours a week and just left her in their kitchen all day, so house training is a little bit difficult but shes slowly catching on. I honestly believe the girls boyfriend was beating her because when she bit me the first time i gave a very very light tap on her butt and said no and she lost her mind for 3 hours, shes gotten better with a lot of love and affection and attention but i want her to be somewhat independent and not solely rely on us for everything.

3 weeks?!  Shocked

Welcome, and thanks for giving her such a good home! We have a lot of info here on behavioral issues, and if she really was taken from her litter so early she will likely have issues from missing out on that key learning period before 8 weeks old. Also, especially if your gut tells you something is a bit off, go get pet insurance. You can go read my blog (linked in my signature) to see why I'm kicking myself for not getting it. Healthy Paws and Trupanion are probably the 2 I would go with, but I've heard good things about VPI too.

As far as socialization, Florida has a pretty active H2M2 group. I was the admin for the Pensacola area group before we moved, and here is their Facebook page.

Good luck with Deeva, she is absolutely adorable and I'm sure you guys will do a great job with her!

How old is she now? They got her at 3 weeks? Way too young to take away from her mama. You will have some extra challenges from the experiences you've described in her short life thus far. There are several threads on here on positive training, you may have do dig a little to find those threads. An excellent thread I stumbled upon is under training/Arooroomom's positive reinforcement/ force free training thread she has a ton of info, resources, etc. Give yourself a chance to look at it, I think you'll get a lot of much needed help. Keep us up to date on her progress, and please more pics, lol

Am I talking to Joshua or Kaleb?
You don't have to socialize with huskies per say. You just need to socialize. After her shots start taking her to dog parks, Petsmart, Tractor Supply. All of those places are pet friendly. She needs socialization with other dogs as well as humans. Blueeyedghost gave you ideas as well for socialization. Good luck to you, she has such piercing blue eyes, kind of melts you. Forgot to mention, ask your vet about local dog activities and groups, they may know of people and places. We used to live near Clearwater, there are opportunities, you just have to look. Any where in Florida is not nearly as remote as where we are now, and we still found playmates, as well as huskies, so I know you can find things.

Your usually talking to Joshua, kaleb is just stessed out with her because she whines and crys and screams all day if im not home, I sell cars so i personally work 70+ hours a week but we are discussing me quitting and going back to school and Kaleb working full time since she has "imprinted" herself onto me (just what ive been reading) the only thing i havent decided upon is whether i want to spay her or not. Ive never bred before and i would gladly let someone breed her for me and have them take care of her during that time but i need help making an educated decision before i get her Banfield account on wednesday because they said its the only time to choose the plan that includes the spaying

Joshua,

I strongly suggest that Kaleb start working with her along with you, my husband and I have been quite successful at dual training, she will listen and respond to both of us equally. It will make for a happier home.

As far as breeding is concerned I would read the threads here about it. We decided not too, because there are so many unwanted huskies out there, we didn't want to add to the problem. Of course it's a personal decision. Banfield must be a pet insurance? Never heard of it, if not can you elaborate on what it is? I think it's unfair to make a decision so early, since you are not sure how her personality will be, since she's difficult right now, and you are not sure if this is because of her previous home or just the way she is. I hope that made sense and I didn't come off sounding bossy or nasty.
Take care,
Renee

Forgot to add, We got Miya too young as well, 5 weeks old, directly from the breeder, so she wasn't re-homed. However, she is very timid with men, besides my husband there are only 2 men she happily greets. I know my girl has never been abused, it's just how she is. Make it a team effort between the three of you, she missed out on so much being away from her mama and litter mates, like 5 to 7 weeks worth of socializing with her litter, it's a rough road, I understand, but it's so worth it.

Please don't breed her. I'm not at all against breeding so please don't take it that way, but you have no idea what her lineage is and there's no way of knowing what health issues are in her family. There are so many people on this forum that have dogs with epic health problems from indiscriminate breeding, it's not fair to potentially introduce more problems into the breed.

Renee, Banfield is the vet hospital associated with Petsmart.
