Scared of water Empty
PostSubject: Scared of water   Scared of water EmptyWed Nov 26, 2014 10:36 pm

So my dog at age 2 months accidentally slipped into a pool when it was with the previous owner.

Now my husky is deadly afraid of water. Like ptsd type afraid.

I cant wash him. The groomers say its like washing a cat.

I bough him a small plastic pool and he doesnt go near it.

How can i remove this ptsd from his memory?!?

We went through this a little with Ghost when she was about 5 months old, another dog knocked her in a pool and she was terrified after that. You need to very slowly desensitize him. Try putting just a little water in the pool, and get him in the bathtub with no water. Once he's ok with the idea, try adding just a little bit of water. As he gets used to it, you can add more.

We worked with Ghost for a while, and now she willingly hops in our pool and swims constantly. You'll get there Smile

Scared of water Empty
PostSubject: Re: Scared of water   Scared of water EmptyThu Nov 27, 2014 12:39 am

I wonder if taking him to a beach or lake, somewhere where he can walk into the water (pools/baths/etc...are different in that the dog has to step into them, whereas a beach or lake they can walk into them) would help him. I have a pool, pretty much all my dogs have not liked going into it, yet had absolutely no problem going into the water at the beach. I'm thinking its possible if he gets used to it enough, water won't bother him as much?
