how many weeks and times per day? Empty
PostSubject: how many weeks and times per day?   how many weeks and times per day? EmptySun Nov 23, 2014 12:54 am

Currently im giving Kaiser ( exactly 3 months old tomorrow ) 3-4 cups per day, 1 cup more less 3 times, of some Super Premium food, maybe similar to Blue Wilderness, in case you want to google it, its called NUPEC, but you will find results in spanish.

in 2 weeks he gained like 2 kilos/4 lbs, currently weights 8kilos/17 lbs.

Im basing the amout i give him on the information that is on the bag.

He eats his food very quickly 1-3 minutes, like if he hadn't eaten in days. I bought him a bowl that makes him eat slowly but didn't work very well, he still eats fast, and tries to eat my other dog food, some times he succeeds, or he starts looking for more or jumping to me like asking for more.

The vet, said to me that i should give him food until he stops eating and eventually Kaiser will find a peak and eventually his consumption will go down to a point of equilibrium.

so my questions are

1) should i follow the vet. advice?
2) how many times should i feed kaiser, still 3 times per day? when change to 2 ?
3) the amount, 3-4 cups, is ok?

Thanks.

Daniel, believe it or not I did find some info in English. Not enough to know what is in the food, however.

3-4 cups seems pretty excessive, how ever, you need to access some things...

1) how is his poops? If they are solid good. If pudding poo, not good.

2) huskies don't eat as much as most typical medium sized dogs, the vet may be off on the amount.

3) 3 times a day is fine, 6-8 months probably go to 2 times a day, dependent on his weight.

4) I believe, if I read correctly, that Nupec has grain in it, with my girl she was always hungry, and had loose poops when I fed a food with grain in it. She indeed ate 3-5 cups daily, and I was not happy with the results.

I know that food in Mexico is difficult to come by. Do you have a Costco nearby? I know some Mexican cities do. If so Costco carries a grain free food Kirklands signature Nature's Domain, it is suitable for puppies, and because it is a better quality food, with out grain you would be feeding less. The only other option is to order on line for other products, and I know the pricing is outrageous for you. Kirklands does offer another type of dog food, but is not grain free, I think it was rice, I do recommend a grain free food, simply because most huskies do better. However, if Kaiser has solid poops, good energy and good health wise, sticking to his current food until he is a year old may be better for you. If that's the case, I would give no more than 3 cups a day, and supplement his eating requirements with a meat product, such as some chicken, and veggies like lightly steamed carrots and green beans and such. This forum in the raw feed section has some great info, that may be some help to you.

Keep us posted and I hope I was able to help. wave Smile

Thanks Renee, indeed i have a costco here, almost infront of my house lol, now it seems a good reason to get my membership.

I can find brands like pro-plan, royal canin, eukanuba in local stores or even order blue wilderness, but as you said the cost is very high so nupec seemed a better option.

Here is what nupec has, just noticed it has the ingridients also in english haha.

Raw Proteín min (%)   28.0
Raw fat min (%)        14.0
Raw Fiber Max (%)     4.0
Moisture  Max (%)      9.0
Ash (%)                   8.0
N.F.E*. (%)      37.0

*nitrogen-free extract  i think it is.

Ingridients:

Cereals (wheat, corn, rice), oilseeds meal, bovine meat meal, fish meal, poultry by products meal, milk by products, vegetal protein concentrate, beef tallow, (BHA and BHT as preservatives) amino acids (lysine and methionine), minerals: phosphorus, calcium, sodium, zinc, manganese, selenium, copper, iron, Vitamins A, D3, E, K, and B-complex (thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, folic acid, cyanocobalamin, niacin, biotin)

So i guess that Cereals count as grain?

at the moment it has been rare that his poop is solid but itsn't totally pudding poo, i asked this to the vet, he told me that i should just change the water, yesterday Kaiser got a vaccine and deworming and that should also help according to the vet, but i most oriented to change food or the amount of food.

Edit: Just went to Costco and found the food, its at better price and with more content that what im currently buying. Gonna try them in following weeks and report back. Thanks for the info

Daniel, no problem! Happy to help, here in the US I think we have too many choices, lol. The NUPEC isn't terrible, but the cereals (yes grain) is the first ingredient, for huskies, in my humble opinion, it needs to be meat as first ingredient. I also did not see (nor could I find on the net) calcium to phosphorus ratios (or just percentage of both) for NUPEC. Make sure you transition slowly, and once you have completely switched over to the new, you should find you need to feed less per meal, generally 25% less than what is recommended on package is a good start, huskies tend to require less and eat less than most dogs. If the slow feeder does not work, hand feeding is a great way to bond with your pup and will slow him down.

Lastly, Nature's Domain, is a good food, it ranks 3.5 out of 5 on dog food advisor, which they say is average/above average. I recommend it simply because you have few options, and out of your options it's the best you will find with out spending a considerable amount of money. It probably isn't the best food, how ever I did a ton of research and quite honestly it's the best you will find in Mexico, the only other real option for you would be to go raw. with that being said, if I lived in Mexico I would feed the Nature's domain, they have several varieties to choose from in the grain free line, if available they did offer a puppy formula, as well as one organic formula.

Again report back, Kaiser is one cute fellow, and I'm eager to see him grow, so more pics please Very Happy

Im not sure, but i don't remember seeing Nature's Domain, i will check again before buying but i think the best option is that one of Costco that is grain free, as you suggested, it even has a big Husky image in the bag, so its good sign right? haha

i don't remember if i read it here besides your comment on first post, but it was suggested that if the poo is pudding he is eating a lot, so instead of 3 times i switched to 2, and it looks that he is doing less poo and more solid, but i still have that sentiment that im giving him not enough or that he is very hungry.

About the pictures, indeed, im just starting to take 1 picture a day of him, im trying to make a 1 year photo video of him growing.

Daniel, The nature's Domain is the same food, I shortened the name of it, my bad, yes has pic of a husky on it and is grain free, at Costco. Funny I live in Texas and have no Costco near me.

Yes overfeeding can give pudding poo, and it can be a combination of overfeeding and the grain. You can also try greek vanilla (plain) yogurt, a scrambled egg, peanut butter, or plain pure pumpkin, as little treats that are good for him (couple tablespoons, one egg). You can also use cut up cooked meat, liver, green beans , apples, carrots (all cut up in big enough bites that he has to chew and not just swallow) for treats and to use for training. This will give him some good things to help with hunger issues.

I can not wait to see your pics!! Such a handsome boy.

Update:

After 1 month with the food, Kaiser now weights like 10-12 Kilos (22-26 pounds) maybe more, his poo now seems normal, im giving him 2 times a day, 3-4 cups, 1 1/2 in the morning and 1 1/2 in the night his general behaviour also seems normal, he still eats fast and seems to want more food but i think is ok-ish, he is growing well, strong, and has good energy. When im going to feed him, he used to jump right away for it, im using that to train him with "sit" and "stay" commands, removing the food before he has a chance to eat it and giving it when he obeys, it has been working well but still needs work.

Hey Daniel, That's great to hear!! Do you use a third command such as "get it"? That may help in calming him down a little and remain in his sit and stay. My girl is 2 years old, and I forgot the "get it" one time, she lay there for 15 minutes before I discovered that I forgot to tell her to 'get it", lol. It may help....

oh yes forgot to type that.

I put the food on his plate but not on the floor, and i tell him to sit.
When he sits, i put the plate on the floor some feet away and tell him to stay, if he runs to the food i quickly remove the plate and tell him sit/stay again.

If he stays, after some seconds i tell gim "go", he goes and i let him eat.

sometimes it works others no, but is just matter of time and keep the training.

Good work with the sit/stay training with food. It took us a while but we were able to do that with Layla. It was really cute to watch her anticipate when we would give her the OK to start eating.

If Kaiser's still eating too fast I'd recommend putting his meals in a treat-dispensing toy like a Kong Wobbler or a ball like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002DK26M/

We had the same problem with Layla eating way too fast. Using the Wobbler and the treat ball really helped slow down her eating and made meals more fun, too. As soon as she turned a year old she started self-regulating and slowed herself down to where we can now give her food in a bowl if needed. Your pup may do the same as his growth slows down around a year of age.

That's great! Glad it's working for you, too. Yeah, not only will it keep him occupied and help him eat slower, but it'll also work his mind as well. Smile
