Walking leash or harness Empty
PostSubject: Walking leash or harness    Walking leash or harness EmptyFri Dec 19, 2014 7:55 pm

Hi all!

As a 1st Sibe Mama, I am experiencing first hand the pulling. While I made peace with the fact that Chloe Michelle will always pull, I feel horrible about walking her with a regular collar as I feel it is choking her. Any thoughts on what I should use? scratch

Thanks!

She does not have to always pull. I strongly believe in a properly fitted prong collar - really, it teaches them to NOT pull. And, even though it looks like a midieval torture device, it really is not. I tried on my lower leg and pulled it tight - because it is made on the martingale collar principle, it only gets tight so much. The key is to let the dog provide the correction (ie - he pulls), not for you to yank, twitch or pull on the collar.

Also, as soon as puppy pulls, you stop walking. Just...stop. When puppy stops pulling, you walk some more. If puppy pulls (she will Laughing ) you stop again. Repeat, ad nauseum. Because dog reallly, reallllly wants to go, she will figure out, soon enough, that if she wants to go, she has to respect the "no pulling" concept.

If you search prong collar you will find info, both pro and con, on using this collar. For me, a life savior.

I like to use it with a Rok bungie leash - gives a shock absorber effect, easier on the dog and on the human's shoulder Laughing

Thanks! That is reassuring. We did get her one. Will definitely look into the Rok leash!

I second Amy's suggestions.

It's a long , difficult life lesson to teach them but loose leash walking is possible and it doesn't need to be so difficult. It's all about technique and your non-verbal body language with your dog.

If you want some videos I strongly recommend solidk9training videos. Some of these have side by sides of improper and proper techniques. I've been studying this guy's techniques and he's amazing.

Good luck

Whatever set up you use depends on your needs at he time of walking.

Harnesses are great but the limitation of them is that you can not effectively administer corrections to your dog. Also, if your dog is pulling and feels resistance at the chest, it drives them to pull more. If you pull, they push. If you push, they pull.

Harnesses are best for hiking and such or for walking dogs already properly trained to loose leash walk.

Walking leash or harness Empty
PostSubject: Re: Walking leash or harness    Walking leash or harness EmptyMon Dec 22, 2014 2:36 pm

I was about to start a topic similar to this. I currently have a Shiba Inu but am visiting a breeder on Friday to probably pick up a Husky. 2 ex-girlfriends have spoiled Kai so now he pulls and tries to go where he wants. Way way back an EZ Walk front harness got him where he was tolerable with just a martingale collar. Now he's simply learned to pull while walking diagonally or pulls hard enough the buckle on one side will slip.

What I was going to ask is if anyone had any experience with the Thunderleash?
