PostSubject: weak stomach    weak stomach EmptyWed Jan 14, 2015 7:59 pm

Hi all,
Since my husky was a puppy she's had a weak stomach. Any dog food she eats causes her stool to be extremely runny. As a result, we've kept her on a boiled chicken and rice diet (which seems to solidify it) with the occasional piece of raw meat hoping that she would grow out of it. She's now a year old and her stomach is still not strong enough to handle any dog foods we've tried. I'm afraid she's not getting the nutrients she needs and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'll comment which will bring this back to the top of the latest topics queue and maybe some others will chime in.
Some Husky's do have ultra sensitive stomachs - they're allergic to just about any grain. Some Husky's have learned how to work the system so they only get "the good stuff".

From what you said, I'd be inclined to think yours has food allergy problems. If I were you, first I'd have a long talk with my vet, then if he's good medically put him on a no grain diet - and this is where you may just have to "have a talk" with your dog. He's been used to getting chicken and rice, so he may turn up his nose at dog food. You'll never know how he handles it if he doesn't eat it ... There are plenty of comments (threads) about transitioning from one food to another, you probably do not want to try for a "cold turkey" switch but transition over a few days or more.

I would try and add some bone meal to the food and a supplement like "Missing link" if you can't get on top of the issues.

The first thing I would be doing is adding some probiotics to the diet. I recommend a good dog one or a multi-strain human one. There is some controversy as to whether the common strains found in human ones can survive the acidity of a dogs stomach.

The probiotics will help populate the gut with a healthy bacterial flora. Around 80% of a dogs immunity comes from a healthy gut function so this is the first place I always recommend people address when their dog has stomach or stool issues.

Slippery Elm tea used short term is an excellent treatment for stomach and stool issues. The slippery elm will create a coating that protects the stomach wall and intestines and correct loose stools. It also works are a pre-biotic for the probiotics to feed on. It will normally fix loose stools in one or two doses. I don't recommend using it for more than 5 days as it is so effective in creating a lining that long term use can limit nutrient or medicine uptake.

Please note: I am not a vet and the above is simply my opinion based on my own experience and research. I would always recommend a vet visit for any condition that is concerning.

I agree with Al, giving in to a dogs tummy is not the answer, and not good to feed her the same thing. Many huskies have sensitive tummies, so it can be difficult to find the one that will agree with your girl. What type of kibble have you tried? Please don't yell Al ( wave ) but I will correct you just slightly, lol, it sounds like an intolerance (food allergies in dogs are similar to allergies in humans, it will show up normally as itching, and skin issues). So your girl has an intolerance to something in her food. If you can list the foods you've tried, name brand and what the protein was, we can help from there. You are right in thinking she is probably lacking in certain nutrients, so the quicker you can get her a good new diet the better. Al, right on on the grain free suggestion, OP have you tried grain free? That would be my starting point, if you have then, as I asked earlier can you list the kibbles you have used? Knowing what you've tried will help greatly on suggesting something.......Another item that I have used is can pure pumpkin, 2 tablespoons for 2-3 days (freeze the rest), this would be a side note to Yonjuro. OP I don't recall where you were from, places outside of North America may not have can pure pumpkin, so Yonjuro's suggestion maybe a better option. I definitely agree on the probiotics, I use vanilla greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons.

Beyond the suggestions of pumpkin, probiotics, and the other things mentioned; OP you can only use those items for just so long, you need to resolve the food issue, or you will be doing those things forever, and that's just not a fun idea for you or your dog.

Renee, I knew I was phrasing that wrong but it's been a long day for me and I hoped someone would fix it, thanks... It's really past time for me to shut up and go to bed.

Thanks, appreciate all the advice. Renee, I'm from South Africa, not too sure about 'pure' pumpkin. Will need to ask around. Same as the Slippery Elm tea. I'm not sure what name brand dog foods are international, but I've given her Hills, Bob Martin, Bobtail. Any dog biscuit also aggravates the problem. I've also attempted weaning her off the chicken and rice by mixing it with the dog food but with no luck. I'll definitely take a look into the no grain diet, I'm sure she won't need convincing (she has no problem with her appetite)

Joshua, I know Hills has grain in it, it appears that Bob Tail has grains, primarily rice, and could not find enough info in the Bob Martin to determine if it had grain in it. Cereals = Grains, in other countries outside of the US they list grains as cereals. You want to find a dog food that list meats first, and try and stay away from cereals(grains), try finding something with potatoes and peas vs corn, wheat, soy or rice. As far as the pumpkin, do you have sweet potatoes available or squash(find something like that with no sugar or salt added), sweet potato, squash and pumpkin are all similar, they have fiber in them, and the fiber is what keeps us humans and dogs regular(firms up when too loose, and softens when too hard).....

Most dog biscuits have grain in them, so you have to be vigilant at looking at the ingredient list of all things you give her. What I personally do is feed between 1-2 cups of kibble a day(the less on slow work out days, the higher amounts when we run and exercise a lot), I will feed a raw meaty bone(this will help in her loose stools), pay attention at how she eats her bones, the raw feed section of the forum can help you on raw feeding. I also give raw pieces of meat for her as well. There is some controversy on when to feed raw and kibble, I recommend feeding raw several hours from when you feed kibble, they digest at a different rates.

I hope that helps a little more..... Very Happy

Hi all, I've been feeding her 'Vetschoice' (The sensitive stomach bag) for the past two weeks and it appears to be working wonderfully. her stool has become more solid and consistent. and she doesn't seem to have a problem with the change in diet. I'll still be monitoring her for the next few weeks or s, but as I said there hasn't been any since the switch.

Just wanted to express my thanks for all the great help and advice Smile really appreciate it.

Hi every1 was wondering if any1 had some advice. I have a 16 week old husky girl and ever since I've had her she has had really runny stools on and off and I've had to keep giving her chicken and rice then gradually weaning her back on to james wellbeloved. Soon as she eats treats or on her food it's back to square one. Vet said it could be a sensitive stomache as huskys are prone to this. I feel cruel with her as she can't get any treats. Is there any advice. I was told james wellbeloved was a great good as breeder started her on beta food which was worse for her.
