Help me please (recent aggression) Empty
PostSubject: Help me please (recent aggression)   Help me please (recent aggression) EmptyTue May 19, 2015 7:38 pm

I recently got a 2 and a half month old husky girl. I've had her for 5 days, by day 4 she learned to sit, potty outside and behave, other than the normal teething. Recently the teething started to hurt so i began to say "NO" everytime she bites and it hurts, it resulted in her biting harder (the NO didnt even startle her, and the redirecting wouldnt always work) so i made the mistake of trying to assert dominance (pinning her down or shutting her mouth with my hand) this ended up in INSANE biting and she does this non stop now. all she does is want to bite me. When i would ignore her after a bite (when she was still behaved) she would run up to me and keep biting my pants and shoes (regardless of me ignoring) none of the correct methods were working, and now this stupid dominance method ruined it even more.

I put her in her crate for the night and she started to howl as usual, so i went out for a 3 minute smoke (she was howling louder) and when i was back, she peed her crate.. i felt so guilty. I didnt realise that was the reason of her howling, had i know i would not have ignored. I let her out and she ran around the house..

I dont know what to do .. i feel like i ruined all the progress we made, now she hates her crate and all she wants to do is bite me.. please help me .. i love her so much Sad

Welcome.  Sorry you've had such a rocky start.

Please read this thread - especially the last post by WPSkier.  The mouthing is something pups do.  I don't subscribe to the whole dominance thing...I want a dog that trusts me, not cowers.

EDIT: Jeez - I just proof read my post and it sound so curt - was NOT meant to be, I'm in the middle of helping husband with tractor maintenance and looking something up - so, not meant to be short, just the dominance thing, as you have experienced, can get nasty results. Jen, WPSkier, really puts it out clearly how to tone down pups exuberance which is what the mouthing is (when you use your 4 paws for standing and running, all your left to play with is your mouth, think about it...

Good luck.

Actually I didnt feed her in 2 days now, it fixed the problem and she just sits there and does nothing now with her tongue out.
Thanks!

ONLY JOKING! I treated her with love and affection this morning, teaching her some tricks and being more patient when she bites my hands and feet, trying to redirect her, its still tough but there is improvement. She still sits and waits and comes when i tell her to.. But please give me all the advice you guys can when you're all awake!
Thanks amymeme for the help Smile

How do you play with her? Huskies like rough play and biting and tugging is how they play but also how they initiate play. Do you know anyone with a pup near her age that is safe to do play dates with? By safe I mean up to date on shots so you don't have to worry about your pup getting parvo or any other things she is susceptible at her age. Siblings teach each other about proper bite and another pup is going to probably teach her the fastest about how much is too much. When a pup bites another too hard they will yelp loudly, not say no. Yelping when she bites you too hard will most likely get her attention far faster to the issue than the word no. She will get it figured out in time. Some just are more rowdy than others and take a little longer. If you are consistent you can do it. Don't look at the set back as a fail. You learned something valuable about how your dog learns. All you need to do is reset and start again.

thanks, i actually yelp every time she bites but sometimes she doesnt even flinch (and i really make a high yelp imitating a dog) however there was this one dog she really got along with, they played for 2 days but then that dog moved away. Should i take her to a daycare so she can interact with other dogs?

great idea - provided she has all her shots. Oh wait a minute. That new strain of dog flu is spreading beyond the midwest...maybe not such a great idea for a young pup.

Ultimately, puppy will, to a large extent, outgrow the mouthiness. In the meantime, wearing padded leather work gloves and long sleeves (of expendable clothing Rolling Eyes ) helps minimize the damage of little teeth.

Also pay attention to her response - does she stop or get more excited when you yelp[?

Daycare would be great when she gets older. At her age I would just opt for another pup you might know that is healthy for her to play with if you can find one. It will help expend her boundless energy. If you can't find her a buddy to play with once or twice a week the gloves are a good option. I agree, to an extent she will grow out of the mouthiness. It will just take a while if you go the waiting route. If you want her to stop biting hands altogether you might spray some bitter apple spray on a pair of gloves so she starts to associate hands with a yucky taste. Just don't spray the glove and then pat her head. If you over saturate the gloves you might get the stuff in her eyes.
