8 week old husky and a puppy pen. Empty
PostSubject: 8 week old husky and a puppy pen.   8 week old husky and a puppy pen. EmptyMon Dec 28, 2015 4:07 am

Hi, I'm new in owning a husky and its a long time since there was a puppy in the family. And there where no pens, crates and puppy pads then. But now we have the whole thing but she is still not happy. We got her 5 days ago. At first she slept in her bed with no enclosure around her and was happy to go to her bed. But we all had to keep an eye on her at all times. We do work on potty training, but she just can't hold it so the accidents happen quite often. To avoid accidents all over the house and keep her safe in the future, in comes the crate and the puppy pen. Now, the crate is a big one, i didn't imagine it to be so big and the pup be so small, so the bed realy is only a half of it. \and the pen goes around the crate. We never close the crate doors. But now she doesn't like to stay in her bed much. She is ok if we put her in when she falls asleep on the floor, but wouldnt go much in herself. She runs into one corner and thinks we have her locked in, but all she needs is to look at a different corner and she is out. Same problem with pen. She is ok to stay in it, if i sit with her. Ok to eat in it and play. As long as the doors are opened. As soon as you close them, in comes the howls. Day or night, it doesnt matter. I still try to get up every 1,5-2 hours to get her out to potty. Not always im in time. She goes nearly as soon as she gets up , si realy need to time it well. After going out, i stay with her till she falls asleep again, put her in the bed and go. If i close the door and not down with her, se starts crying. I come down, she thinks its the crying tht makes it and off she goes howling even more. I'm considering taking her upstairs with us for the night with the bed, but afraid she will go there and then if i dont open my eyes in time and rush her down. But that will not stop her from howling the head off during the day. I have about 2 weeks to teach her to stay in pen till i have to get back to work and there will be noone hlf a day with her. I want her to be happy in her home and not stressed out to the bone. Oh, and we have some chew toys and a puppy bony bits for chew that are eatable. And the kong cone, but that doest keep her happy for long and she starts crying again. I know its a long post but i'm realy hoping on some advice, thanks.

Ditch the pen and puppy pads--they do nothing but teach a pup they can go inside.

And the biggest lesson you learn is if your pup is having an accident, you're doing something wrong. Your pup is 8 weeks old and is very much a baby. She can hold it for maybe an hour, maybe 2 at the most at night. She needs to be taken out immediately after eating drinking, and otherwise every hour on the hour until she gets the idea.

She should be staying in her crate--crate training is pivotal. It sounds like her crate is too big for her right now, so either get a smaller one or get a divider. She won't want to have an accident in her bed, but you have to be diligent about keeping her on a schedule to prevent that from happening or the whole training process will have to start over.

Your pup will howl, that's just the deal. She's scared and misses having her littermates. A hot water bottle filled with just warm water and covered in a towel can help, but otherwise you need to let her howl for a night or two. It's heartbreaking, but necessary.

New puppies are exhausting. I've slept in a sleeping bag near the crate so I could take the pups out throughout night quickly, because they really can't hold it.

You also are going to have a problem if you expect to leave her at 10 weeks old for work. Her little puppy bladder simply won't be able to do that. She WILL have accidents, so consider getting a pet-sitter to be with her.

Thank you for your answer. I am looking around atm for a smaller crate. She never goes in the crate and is holding, when gets up if i lift her up and take outside. If she stays alone for a minute, thats it, its an acident. Unfortunately i can't hear her waking up every single time so i try to put an alarm clock every 1,5 hours to get her out. I did talk with my boss so half way through work i can come home and get her out. She will still have accidents since that will be only about 3 hours after i will have to leave her. I know its not perfect. I know it will take longer to train her to go out. but atleast she will not be alone too long.
About her pee. She does it about every half an hour. When i get er out, she goes about 2-3 times, just bits at a time. I'm starting to think maybe she has an infection? With her poo its more or less setled, she doesn't do that at home.
And another question. is it ok that she is only 6lb 2oz? We were thinking that she just didnt get enough food since she is a very fast eater. Thanks.

If you allow her to be alone for 3 or 4 hours and to have accidents, she will never be housebroken or completely reliable. Some people learn to deal with that, but keep that in mind.

You said she was 8 weeks old--is she 8 weeks old, or was she 7 weeks old when you got her 5 days ago? 7 weeks versus 8 weeks makes a huge difference in their development and then she very likely can't go more than a half hour.

If she's 7/8 weeks, anywhere from 6-10 lbs is fairly normal.

She was born 26.10 so that makes her 9 weeks today. And i got her 23.12. I have noticed she makes like a sucking noise when sleeps sometimes. I thought it could be still the instinct of sucking mums milk. We are going to the vet this week to get her properly checked.
I understand, that to get the best results u have to be in it 100% all the time. But most of us have to work to keep our loved ones. I am not 100% happy about it and never be, but thats the way it is.

A UTI would not be uncommon in a young pup and until that is clear it's going to be hard for her to hold it even the amount of time she should be able to at any given age. Another time you will want to take her out aside from just after she eats or drinks is after she plays. Playing often gets everything inside ready to move. With the crate, if you don't have a family member you can drop her off with while you are at work then I would probably remove her bed from the crate to ease in inevitable clean up you will have to do each time you get home. Perhaps replace it with a towel instead that you can throwing in the wash easily or if the bed has a removable cover pull it off, wrap the bed in a trash bag, then put the cover back on. Something to protect the foam from soaking up urine. Also invest in a good enzyme spray. It will help later when she can hold it the full time but just doesn't want to because she has basically made her a spot she prefers to pee in.

She doesn't soil in her crate. It is big, too big. The bed is always dry, she gets out of the crate to soil. So i keep puppy pads in the puppy pen just to ease the cleaning up, not to train her to go and do things on it. The bed we got is one with waterproof covers so in any case, it should stay easy to clean. I have the spray too. So if she pees on the floor, i just clean the mess with paper towel, go over with a moist towel and then spray. What im worried about is how bad are the fumes to the puppy.
I feed her and give her treat in the pen, but she still prefers to fall asleep near me or my family members.
Unfortunately i don't have anyone that i could leave her with safely. My inlaws have a dog too that is completely ruined and i don't want my pup to fall in to the same patern. And with her injections not finished, she can't go around with other dogs. So its only me, really. Should I buy a smaler crate for her even if i don't plan to keep her in it just yet? And what age should a pup be schooled in crate training? I've seen people saying from 8 weeks, some say 12-16 since thats when they can realy control the bladder. Thanks

I would be working on crate training right now. It is important that she learn to be in it without you as soon as possible. Every pup is a little different on how long it takes for them to get the hint on being crated. Some pick it up fast and calm down to it, others take a little longer. If you baby her and always come running when she whines or makes a sound it will take longer. Huskies are notorious for having separation anxiety and would be around us about all the time until they are older and more independent. At some point you will have to tough love her and she will have to sleep on her own or be crated alone. Doing this for her in short spurts at the start will help her make the transition to crate training. I would start with crating her while I'm in the shower or something and work up with longer periods from there. Unless you want to listen to her all night I wouldn't crate her in your bedroom.

In my opinion I wouldn't put her in a smaller crate until her body is able to hold it for the period of time between opportunities you have to let her out. If you can let her out every 3 hours when you go back to work then I would wait to put her in the smaller crate until she is 12 to 16 weeks old. If she physically can't hold her bladder as long as she must then there's no point in making her stand in it until you get home. If her bladder physically can hold it the amount she will be crated then the smaller crate will actually serve as an aid to convince her that she actually does need to try and hold it rather than just figuring I'll turn one corner into my toilet and still be comfortable over here because that's just how much space I have.

Thank You ! It makes the things more clearer. I will look around for a smaller crate tomorrow, just will need to make sure her bed fits in it or at least the soft bit. But i will still leave it attached to the pen for the times when i do go to bed or i leave the house for now. So IF she can't hold it, it wouldnt be in her bed but on a pad or floor. Just to keep her safe from chewing and biting everything. oh, had to hide cats fluffy house since she was trying to get into it.
