PostSubject: My first puppy, hello from Evansville IN   My first puppy, hello from Evansville IN EmptySat Jan 12, 2013 2:21 am

Hello there I am Morgan and I am 21. I was finally able to have the means to acquire the puppy of my dreams. When I called the lady about him I had no idea what he even looked like. Lucky me happened upon exactly what I wanted, a red and white combination in fur color, blue eyes, and an 'evil' looking mask. People of the forum, meet Malfoy!

My first puppy, hello from Evansville IN 4JSsk

I get to go and pick him up next Sunday, he will a day or two shy of six weeks. He looks like the runt of the litter to me after viewing his siblings in videos and photos I have received. Don't worry though, he is already started on solid foods and his momma isn't always in the pen with him and his siblings. Many more pictures will follow when I have him in my arms.

Welcome to the forum! Malfoy is adorable.

However, he really shouldn't be leaving his litter mates or his mother at six weeks. That's way too young. Dogs learn bite inhibition from other dogs from 5-8 weeks old. I would see if the breeder will keep him with his mother (and hopefully some littermates) until he is 8 weeks old or you are going to have a tough time training him not to be mouthy. A reputable breeder will never let a puppy go earlier than 8 weeks.

It seemed young to me, it has seemed young to most everyone I speak to about it. I imagine that since they are fully weaned it will be expensive to feed them and handle a full litter of puppies at that point. I can't say I agree with her and her reasoning but I am fully prepared to be bringing home a handful. I've already paid for him to start puppy training classes once he is 10 weeks old and my logic is after a little bonding time with me, getting comfortable in his new surroundings being around other puppies will be good for him, get him social and in social situations where I can apply corrective training if he gets too mouthy. I do understand the concern and appreciate you telling me why it's best to wait another week or so but I think I am still going to be bringing him home the 20th.

Might I ask though, Ericobeasto, I see your puppy is two months old. How big is s/he now?

If they didn't budget correctly or can't afford it why are they having a litter or puppies? Are they giving the dogs shots? Bite inhibition can be more than just being mouthy, so please read up and use the search function on the site. Please be careful bringing him around all sorts of dogs before vaccinations, he could potentially get very sick.

Congrats.

You'll do fine with him. You just have to put in a little more effort in training him for certain things. I got mine at 6 weeks too and with a little extra effort he is a wonderful dog (mind you he has to be exercised a lot but that is any husky) I don't think you can ever be completely prepared for a husky pup.. They are full of surprises! But as long as you do some research and put in the time he needs to be around you you'll do fine. I hope you have a great time with him and he brings as much joy to your life as mine does. Can't wait for more pics! Congrats!

I don't know if they didn't budget correctly, that was just something I had read on the internet as to why some people give their puppies up early. They are giving the dogs shots, that was one of the first handful of questions I asked as I was curious on what I should expect to pay when I take him to the vet myself. He may be a touch harder to raise but that'll make him all the more special to me. I feel like a big concern is if he gets aggressive what if I give him to a shelter? Feel confident in knowing I would never do something like that, it would be like taking my child up for adoption (if I had one mind you) Have no fear, Malfoy is stuck with me for the long haul. Wink

I am in agreeance with everyone about him coming home too young. Everyone has told you what you need to know, so I won't chime in anymore about it.

Welcome to the forum and he is very cute. wave

Draco! When I was picking up things I would need for his arrival I found him the most perfect stuffed dragon toy. It was amazingly fitting. And now I must ask...Luna or Xenophilius?

Draco is my FAVORITE character from the books. With my HP obsession only being beat right now with my love for this puppy I knew I needed a HP name, it seemed perfect and horribly fitting with his evil looking mask.

Perfect!! We don't have our little girl yet, but when we get her, she will be Luna. :-) Our two cats (I know, I know . . . ) are Sirius and Tonks. We deviated a little from Harry Potter when we got our other dog . . . his name is Cinna (Hunger Games).

I never read or saw the Hunger Games but I heard it was pretty good, had to have been if you named your puppy from it. I bet Luna and Malfoy would make for the best of friends!

Well, it's an important thing to ask. I would ask them why they would give the puppies away at 6 weeks when it is illegal to do so in Indiana - It is one of the few states that DOES NOT allow homing puppies until after 8 weeks.

I'm not worried about you - You seem like a good puppy-mom to be! But, if they are knowingly selling pups under 8 weeks, that is nto good and if they just don't know at least you can inform them.

I'll make you a deal because I want the best for my puppy. I am still going up on the 20th with the intent to pick him up but if I feel as though he would be better suited to stay I will request she keep him another couple of weeks. I'll be the ultimate judge of it though, I will be checking out the surroundings he has been raised in, I would like to actually see him eat a little bit of puppy food just to prove me me he can and is used to it. I will be making sure he is playing with his siblings and functioning well. If any red flags come up he stays longer, if not I will continue to bring him home with me. If he does end up coming home with me until he has all the needed shots he won't be out and about at the dog parks or around dogs I do not know. I assure you that despite me having the intent of bringing him home at six weeks I am responsible enough to care for him and ensure he stays healthy.

I will bring it to her attention and seek answers into her reasoning on it. It's not often I have a day where I can be off of duty from the military and off of my part time job to be able to make such a drive so in a way it's kind of a favor to me she was willing to let him go a bit early.

What are your opinions on puppies traveling? I have to go to Ft. Riley, KS at the end of March for a week and want to bring him out with me. I can have him in the hotel I will be at and have plenty of time to be with him. I am more so asking about the process of having him in the car for 8 hours.

Morgan,

It is not that YOU aren't capable. It's about what is best for the puppy, but more importantly in this situation is that it is illegal in your state. Do they know that?

I'm sure you will do great, that isn't the worry here dear!

As stated when I am there, I will be checking things out with him and sitting down with his current owner to talk about an concerns either of us have. If I feel he needs to stay a little longer then he will. I will make note to also bring up why she feels compelled to let me have him so early and check to see if she knows it is illegal. Since you telling me this I have been trying to research Indiana puppy laws, could you perhaps provide me with the link where you found the information at so I fully understand it all.

These are real documented ordinances - you can click on the ordinance next to Indiana in the table. It is run by Michigan State University - that is who compiles all of the info.

Aw man, I had edited my post but I didn't catch that it hadn't saved it. As soon as I asked and came back to this page I saw where you are from. I am actually getting Malfoy from close to you in a town called Delphi I believe. I had been thinking of going over to Lafayette after I got him to go to pets mart, if you want and it's not weird or anything would you want to meet up there, introduce our huskies and ourselves?
