PostSubject: Anyone been feeding their puppies Kirkland's Nature Domain?   Anyone been feeding their puppies Kirkland's Nature Domain? EmptyFri Nov 13, 2015 9:39 pm

Hey all! well, my 10.5 week old Shiloh had his first trip to the vet today for his second round of vaccines. He weighs 13.6 lbs and healthy. I am feeding him Acana puppy food now but would like to switch over to Kirkland's Nature Domain later down the road when he's older (maybe 10 months). Doesn anyone feed their huskies this brand? I have heard it's quite good.

I feed my two the Natures Domain. They like the Salmon meal and Sweet Potato. They seem to do pretty well on it and my vet says its a good food as well, I used to mix it with Blue Freedom but stopped that about a year ago.

^That is a pretty good thread just to see what everyone else is feeding.

A few other websites you can use to help you make the selection are:

Sorry I can't be more helpful than that. I don't have any experience with Kirkland's personally.

Sarah, There are a few people here who feed Kirkland's. Not to bash, because I feed TOTW and it's also a Diamond product, but Kirklands would be considered a quality food, TOTW high quality, and Acana Premium quality. If we went by the dogfoodadvisor system Kirkland's is a 3.5 star, TOTW 4.5, and Acana a 5, I'm not sure what your reasoning is to go down in quality of food? And again those who are feeding Kirkland's please take no offense. People who are feeding a Diamond product have to check on a regular basis for recalls. As far as I know it, Acana has never had a recall. So do you mind shedding some light as to why you would not want to feed your pup Acana?

2 years ago, Natures Domain was a 4.5 on dog food advisor (I checked it when I got Kohdi) I wonder how/why ratings go down on that site. I just went back and through reading reviews, other people remember it being 4+ stars as well. It's interesting.

Sarah, I will add to this......if it's about price, therefore Orijen and Fromm would be out for you too. I would suggest trying Earthborn, high quality, 4.5 star and no recalls. There are a few others, but again we are talking Acana price. Earthborn is cheaper than Acana. If recalls are not an issue, but price is I would go with a higher end food of Diamond products, Diamond, Wellness, Canidae, TOTW. And yes, all four of those last mentioned are made by Diamond.

FWIW.....Many products are sold under a name, but made by another. Diamond makes a host of nationally known quality foods. As I mentioned above, also included is 4 Health, Kirklands, and several others. In the past I have also recommended Merrick's, but they have been recently been bought by Purina, I believe. Merrick's again is a high quality, 5 star food, no recalls, and cheaper than Acana. So there are some choices you can look at. Hope that helps. Smile

Jimmy, It could be that the formulas have changed, even though the ingredient list looks like the same. When I read advisor's summary, I noticed that what they reviewed only list one meat based protein source and then 9 other ingredients before you get another meat based protein. To me that is why they lowered the rating. Advisor tends to lean towards grain free, meat based protein kibble as premium kibble. Hope that helps!!

Would have to be a formula change Renee, because it's protein used to be at 34 or 36 or something like that and I think it's lower now. Hmm. Kinda sucks they did that!

Yes, Jimmy, it is at 27%. Problem is, advisor rates based on plant based protein vs meat based protein. In their opinion meat based protein is better for dogs, I have to admit I do agree, but it is only an opinion. The percentage is overall protein, so meat based plus plant based. So as a consumer, you need to look at percentages as well as ingredients. I prefer a kibble that lists 2 or 3 meat based proteins as the first ingredients followed by plant based. I hope that made some sense in how there is a difference in % vs ingredients. Also, 27% protein is a good percent to feed an adult husky, so as a pet parent, you look at the percent first, then ingredients.

I believe it was higher in meat based protein 2 years ago, probly why it was rated higher too. To me it just sucks that you buy something for years, not really expecting formulas to change, but they do I guess. So you can be lured into buying what you think is quality food (any brand) and the next month they change the formula and unless you are checking its rating every month or whatever, you would never know! I can see checking for recalls and stuff often, but I don't think the average person would think to see if it's rating stays the same. Atleast I wouldnt, til now, haha.

Renee: I am very happy with Acana. I know it's one of the best kibbles out there with fresh only ingredients and soy and grain free which is very important to me. My thing is, I want to keep my puppy on Acana puppy and junior until he has reached Adult hood and I can switch him over to an adult brand. I have no problem with price (yes Acana is expensive) but my concern is all of their adult foods have a very high protein content (i.e. 28% and above) which I heard is not good for a husky that isn't sledding, working or running 15+ miles a day. My friend was feeding her adult sibe a food with a high protein content and he developed hot spots. I know every dog is different and I know my dog will be very active but nothing like a working husky. I am definitely considering TOTW as an adult food. I heard Merrick is also descent but I have also heard that Kirkland's adult Salmon and sweet potato is great too.

Sarah, again, not bashing on Kirkland's, but there is more of a plant based protein than meat based protein, personally, I feel that the first 2 or 3 ingredients in a kibble needs to be meat. I know of several people here who do not have working dogs that feed a high protein diet, however, I understand your concerns. Most of us here feed in the 27-33% protein, so don't get too concerned of numbers being over 30%. If price is not the problem, and you don't want to monkey with looking out for recalls, the Earthborn or Fromm are excellent choices. Yes personally I do feed TOTW, and many of us do here. It is the only food that my girl will consistently eat, and has zero issues with. I do believe I gave you a great list of kibble to choose from. Again tho, I would certainly go from a supreme quality kibble to another supreme, or high quality vs supreme to quality.

Ok, not wanting to hi-Jack the thread but I think it's relevant. With my two, it's never just kibble, I always add some kind of meat, usually hamburger, just so it's not so boring and I'd think most of us do add something, so with that being said, wouldn't that up the ante on "quality" versus "supreme"? And since a lot of do add meats and stuff, wouldn't it put a "supreme" over the top, so to speak? I can see if people are just feeding kibble and nothing else, that they'd want the highest quality kibble available but I'd think for those of us adding things to the kibble, there might be more of a balance.

Jimmy, I think so. I also feed some meat, I also replaced one of Sofie's meals with raw. the problem with cooked vs raw is some nutrients are lost. Jimmy, there is nothing wrong with Kirkland's, I have recommended ND to people in Mexico and S.A. because that is really the only quality food available to them, unless ordering online and shipping kills them which makes it less cost effective. My only issue with the OP is why go from a super high quality food to a less quality, when there are so many others closer in quality to what she is currently using. My mom I respected so much on feeding dogs. She was indeed ahead of her time, she fed kibble with 80/20 hamburger, a quarter pound daily for our gsd, there wasn't as much variety then, and she really didn't think kibble alone was 100% what they needed. If your dogs coats are shiny and soft, which is quite obvious with yours. Their poop is well formed and not mushy. They have energy and bright eyed, then I think what you are feeding is more than fine. Some dogs I think do better than others with high meat protein levels. Miya, I consider is a very high energy dog, and most foods do not agree with her, Sofie in her young life is showing the same tendencies. So for me TOTW is what I'll feed, unless there is another recall, then I will probably shift to Fromm or Earthborn.
