Hey all!
I am new here to the forum and have a 10 week old sibe. We got him at 8 weeks and he's a bundle of energy. I would like to know how much is too much exercise for a 10 week old? He wants to run and play all day so after he wakes up, I take him for about a 10-15 minute walk (making sure he doesn't go near fire hydrants or other dogs as he is not fully vaccinated yet). Then he comes back, eats, sometimes sleeps and back in our yard to play. I have heard not to overdoit because their joints are still growing and I never force him to walk, run or play. I let him tell us when he's tired. So how much exercise is too much for a 10 week old? Thanks everyone!

Welcome Sarah to the forum. Rule of thumb is 5 minutes for every month old, so 10 weeks 10-15 minutes is fine. Make sure it is not on pavement, cement, etc. needs to be on grassy surfaces, dirt roads. What you are doing is fine, let him tell you he is done and never push. A great way to overcome his energy, is to play vs walking, and more important training in a fun way. Tiring mind and body is key to a less than ball of energy.

Btw, since I am on this thread, I seen your other one on feeding. Are you still feeding raw? If so, what I have found to be successful with my new girl, 13 weeks today, is feed 1/2 cup kibble 3 times a day, and then last meal feeding raw. This has balanced her tummy well, and seems not to be so hungry during the evenings. If you are not feeding raw, then 1/2 cup 4 times a day is fine, my breeder did recommend that to me when I picked her up. I just felt that it made her tummy upset at night by feeding all kibble, and that one meal of raw firms things up. Hope that helps you out with both of your questions.

Thanks so much for your reply. The breeder sent us home with raw meat and ACANA food. We finished the raw about a week ago and since then he has been on dry ACANA puppy kibble which he loves. My only concern is I am feeding him twice a day 2/3 cup in the AM and 2/3 cup in the PM. He always wants more kibble after both feedings so I am not sure if it's enough. ACANA feeding guide says 1 1/4 cups per day so I do that, split into 2 feedings. I'm wondering if I should feed him 3 times a day, especially since he's such an active pup!

Well at 10 weeks my breeder was feeding high quality kibble 1/2 cup 4 times a day. I did switch to another high quality, and am feeding 1/2 cup 3 times a day and then raw. If you are not wanting to feed raw, I would try the 3 times a day or 4, so smaller portions spread through out the day. Is that the high end on your package? Because my package, although different brand, has me at 2 cups max per day and 1 1/4 on the low end for age and weight? Also do you know the size of mom and dad? that will help in determining your pups adult size, so it is easier to recommend how much to feed.

The father was about 55-60lbs, the mother maybe 35-40lbs. The ACANA puppy food I am feeding says 1 cup= 441 cals. It says if your dog will be 44lbs, to feed 1 1/4 if he is currently 11bs (mine is about 13.8 lbs now but will get an offical weigh in this Friday at the vet). Or if your dog is currently 11 lbs and will grow to 66 lbs (which i doubt mine will), to feed 1 1/4 cups a day. I will try and split 1 1/4 cups a day into 3 meals (morning, afternoon, and evening).

Yes, I think he will do better on 3 meals a day vs 2. Good luck!! Acana is a great food. He should end up around breed standard since both parents are, so my guess, he will be in the 50-55 pound range, top end breed standard for males.
