Hello! A few days ago my fiance and I picked up our very first Siberian Husky! We have done extensive research and knew that the Sibe was the right breed for us!

Here is our little Loki at just 3 days old!

Hello IAHT forums! New Husky owner here! KIBEszO

And here he is now, just after we got him, at 7 weeks old!

Hello IAHT forums! New Husky owner here! Dwd0Y6b

He is a very big boy for a 7 week old Siberian! We think it is because he came from a small litter, of just 3. But we weighed him today and he is a whopping 15 pounds already! He is keeping us extremely busy making sure he is well taken care of, but i just know that this forum is going to be the place to be, as a great knowledge base and sharing in our Husky fanaticism. Because we have gone all out CRAZY for Siberians!

Thanks for having us and we can't wait to get active and involved with all you lovely people!!

Loki is beautiful! Welcome to the forum! Weekends can be pretty slow sometimes but I'm sure you will be welcomed by others soon.

It'll be fun watching Loki grow up Smile

Thank you! I completely understand that things can slow down a little around the weekend, Siberians sure like to get their exercise so it really shows how much everyone loves them so much! I have a feeling most weekends will be spent keeping Loki occupied and exercised, so its no surprise that's what everyone else does!!

I forgot to mention, we are from Windsor Ontario Canada. For years i have wished for a winter with no snow, and now that we have a Husky its a bummer we have had almost none this year. I guess its for the best with him being a pup, the temperature has been hovering between 32-46 F for the last few weeks, and we don't want our puppy to get cold when he goes outside.

Funny enough, my fiance has already decided sometime in the future (a year or two from now) that we should get Loki a playmate! I guess its true, like potato chips, you can't have just one Husky Laughing

Loki is so cute! Welcome! Tons of information! Also, Huskies do very well in the cold so as he gets bigger you'll be surprised to see how much he will want to be outside even when you're freezing! Lutsen is 4 months old and he's obsessed with the snow and cold!

Welcome to the forum. Your snow has gone south for this winter. Seems since I got my husky we have actually had more snowfall in the winters.

We are probably in the 6-8 inch range which is decent for us since we had been in an ice storm routine the last several years more than snow. Last year we had a couple feet total through the season. Kenzi and Keno don't go too nuts. They play in it for a bit but Kenzi will opt to be inside if given the choice over being out in the snow. She is my anti-husky. Her favorite part about snow is eating it.

Yeah Lutsen loves to eat it too. We had an entire baseball field to ourselves with about 9 inches of it on Saturday. Took Lutsen to it and ran around with him on his leash. He's gotten better at learning how to heal but I'm thinking it might be time to consider a harness since he seems to really like running and hurdling over huge snow piles.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm sure Loki would give you some hugs for your kind words! We just don't know how long is too long for him right now, so we just let him out to do his thing and bring him back inside. I know hes super fuzzy but you can't be too careful! I'm sure once he gets a bit bigger he lives up to his "Snow Dog" reputation!

Yea, it seems our seasons here can be so crazy! Last winter was extremely cold around this time, and we had gotten quite a bit of snow! I do enjoy the lower cost to heat the house, but now that we got this guy we are really curious to see what he does in the white stuff! Maybe in a few weeks if it still doesn't snow we will take him to an ice rink so he can see it before spring comes!

I know that rescuing is always a really good option, and it was something we considered. However we have 2 adult house cats (de-clawed) and from everything i read our best chance at having a good relationship between furbabies was to get our Sibe as a pup, so that growing up he accepts them as part of the pack early on. We know this is not an automatic thing, and we have our work cut out for us, and I'm sure that a lot of people rescued Sibes and had no issues with integration. We just couldn't take the chance of bringing somebody home that didn't have a guaranteed forever home.

For a long time I really wanted a Siberian, mostly because i admired the breed so much. But i never had the capacity to take care of one and restrained myself. A few years ago i met the girl of my dreams and asked her to marry me. We got a house together and moved in. I ran into a gentleman with a Siberian during a walk and got the chance to talk to him. He stressed that the breed was more difficult than others and that i should do my research. I actually read quite a few topics here as a guest because of the great knowledge base.

We have a great set-up for Loki. Our yard is completely fenced in with a 6' chain link, and after watching some youtube videos we also realized that never should we leave our Loki outside unattended. We got him from a reputable breeder that cared very deeply for her dogs and the pups. 7 weeks is a bit early from everything i read but the situation was unforeseen and in no part the breeders fault.

We will be crate training him (his cries are heartbreaking) but already he has a handle on outside, and going to the door when he would like to do go potty. Of coarse, in the middle of the night we have alarms set every 2 hours and like clockwork once we bring him outside he goes.

He is going to our vet tomorrow, as he comes very highly recommended. He already has his first round of immunizations but we would like to have him fully checked out to make sure he is in top health. We also will be signing him up for obedience class, and the instructor has already met him. The instructor has a Husky mix himself and seems very educated on the breed. We really want our Loki to have the best life possible and in every way, he is our child.

If any of you have any tips, please share them! I'm really big on going into things with as much information as possible, especially when it comes to a living breathing animal. Thanks so much!!

I've responded to one of your other threads but haven't wished you 'Welcome to our home away from home!' Well, some of us seem to live here!

You have no idea (yet) how great it is to see someone who'd done his (er, their) homework before going out and getting some cute bundle of fur that they can't handle in a few months. Stick around and ask your questions, someone here will be glad to answer and we do have a grand crowd of very knowledgeable folk willing to share their knowledge and experience ( they are definitely not the same! Smile ).

You know, for as much research that i did, one thing that has really surprised me is just how smart these dogs really are. I never really believed the lower rankings they got in IQ scores, due to the poor metrics used, and heard a lot about how smart they are,  but now that he is home with us, its astounding how fast he picks up on things. This is of coarse a double edged sword, and its apparent now that anything we miss now will come back to haunt us in the long haul.

In other news, we finally got snow! A miserable amount, and hardly worth mentioning, but it was a bit more exciting watching Loki get snow on his nose and see those guard hairs keeping the snow off him too. Getting a picture was hard work, he kept darting around the yard in joy for the snow!

Ahh how cute....BTW the reason huskies fail so bad on the doggy IQ test...they are stubborn, aloof, and independent...I always tell new owners to use their names when teaching a command I.E. Loki Sit, because if you just say sit, they think you are talking to the husky behind them, lol.....glad y'all got some snow.

congratulations on your new fur baby, he is cute.
i wondered about those IQ test too, they are not the type of dog that will do exactly what you say when you say it but they are much smarter then most give them credit for that for sure. they are a hole other level of smart. they are also far more perspective, and mentally awake.
