Hey everyone!
I'm still searching for a good breeder, but wanted to see if anyone on here has heard anything about Kilgallon Kennels in Millstadt Illinois? Their website is mush-puppies.com. They seem good to me but I'm no expert and want to get other opinions before deciding! I've already looked through the SHCA website BTW, so if anyone has any recommendations for breeders on the east coast I'd be appreciative!

Plus- health testing verified for hips and elbows....but not for eyes on most. Only one has certified eyes from 2009, nothing more current. That would be a big red flag.

My concerns would start with advertising show quality puppies....from dogs with severe structural faults and breed disqualifications. None of the dogs are proven in any way. Full breeding rights are just a few extra dollars away (not to mention outrageous prices, for what?), regardless of the puppy's actual structure. NuVet pusher....my experience is that no reputable breeder hinges their health guarantees on on such gimmicks. "AKC Inspected" is a huge red flag....the breeders who are being inspected are producing high volumes, which brings the AKC out. This is not an elective the breeder chooses....

Thanks HuskyMom, I took a look at the site and besides the fact that they have 18 females - which suggests they're breeding for quantity (read puppy mill) there were a couple of things that turned me off.
1)  As you noted, the AKC inspection and hyping the AKC registration.
2) Selling 3rd party products from their web site, again as you noted.
3) The real turn off for me was the completely closed kennel.  No visitation with the pups till they're 8 weeks - when you're picking it up?  Most breeders are overjoyed to show  off their dogs, aren't they?
4) Notes from their "limited warranty"
a) "Our warranty is for three years ONLY with a verifiable subscription to NuVet Plus supplements."  Speaks for itself, you have to provide them with an ongoing income for their waranty to be valid?
b) "Seller guarantees that puppy is free of life threatening diseases or disabilities for 72 hours"  I've never heard of cataracts or dysplasia showing up within 72 hours, have you?

I'll quit, I had to go take another look at what I thought I had seen earlier ....

I'm not meaning this to sound negative by any means but I am one to ask, if you have looked at the SHCA's page, and I hope you went further than the referral list but also to see the high standards breeders have to abide by to be members in good standing (therefore listed on the referral page), why aren't you considering a breeder who is in good standing with the parent club?

I've looked through the list in all of the states I'd be willing to travel to for a pup but can't find enough info online for any of them. I found the one mentioned above through someone I met who purchased a dog from them and just wanted some opinions! I'd love to choose a breeder listed on the SHCA website but hardly any have a website (that I've been able to find)

Many reputable breeders have dropped websites, they are costly and take a lot of time to maintain. Most rely on first hand introductions and direct contact. Honestly one of the things puppy mills and BYBs have over most of us is the art of shameless marketing.

Yes i'm starting to notice a majority of reputable breeders either have no website or a very simple/small one. which isn't convenient since so many are far away from me Crying or Very sad

Nothing hurts to contact a breeder, explaining what you are looking for, what you want to do with your future pup, etc.... see what they come back with. The thing I love about the breeders I've been blessed enough to get dogs from have turned into very close friends.

Meg, what you say is right even though it sounds counter-intuitive.  But I think you'll find that the good breeders are breeding for working dogs or show dogs and the ones that they sell out as pets - while they are probably excellent dogs - just don't make the cut for their very specific purposes.  The other reason that they don't advertise all that much is that they probably have a standing list of people looking for their puppies - people who have been vetted from the ground up.  The good breeders ( and in my book there are either good or bad breeders, not much of any in-between ) want to make sure that their pups go to good homes.

I've been looking at various rescue sites and the reasons people give for surrendering their dogs are asinine.  "We're moving ...". well, your current landlord allows dogs, why can't you find another one who does.  "We can't control it ...", if you'd done your home work before you got the dog, you'd know what you were getting into - Huskies are not just another dog!

And speaking of rescues Meg, have you considered rescueing a pup. There are sites like RescueMe who have dogs - from young puppies on up who are begging for a good home.

While many breeders don't maintain a website, a few may have Facebook pages you can visit. Often they will post a few pics of puppies, events they've entered, things of that nature that could help you get a feel for the breeder, in addition to the things Huskymom and Al have mentioned.
