2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Sibe won't use dog door to potty Empty
PostSubject: Sibe won't use dog door to potty   Sibe won't use dog door to potty EmptySat Dec 10, 2016 1:15 am

I have a three year old female husky who I'm having issues with in terms of using the house to go to the bathroom. Unless she is in the same room with an open door she will not go outside. She's used just about every room in the house. 9/10 times I don't catch her in the act.

I have a dog door in my hallway that I have had her use reluctantly. If I put her outside and close the door she'll come back in with no problems. I've seen her go outside as well on occasion. She fits through it just fine, its not too small.

But deep down I think she's too dang lazy to use it. She's a total couch potato and would rather lay under the bed or table or on the couch (she has her own spot, just like Sheldon Cooper. No one sits there but her).

I've been taking her out in the mornings, mid day and at night and I always use the same words when doing it (let's go pee). I reward her when she does. But if I leave i always come home to a mess. And if the door is closed she just gets up and pees right there in front of me.

I need to start kicking her outside when I leave because I'm tired of coming home to a mess, but she also needs to use the dog door. I just need some advice on how to get her to use it. There's no way to lock her in a room with it since its at the back of a hallway.

I've also been looking into switching over to a raw diet and I'm almost afraid of gnarly poops as we transition being found on the carpet.

Crate training would probably be more effective. Crate her when you are gone and when you are home keep her tethered to you so you can give correction if she tries to potty inside. As soon as you let her out of crate take her outside. When you take her out start directing her through the dog door by feeding her tether through the door then try to coax her through on her own but you may need to encourage her through some by lightly tugging on tether. Treat her when she goes out the door.
