Resource guarding in 7 week old puppy Empty
PostSubject: Resource guarding in 7 week old puppy   Resource guarding in 7 week old puppy EmptySun Dec 18, 2016 9:21 pm

So I brought home my first husky puppy today. She is 7 weeks old. I've noticed a few things since I've brought her home.
1. She was getting into the cat's food (which I forgot to put up) and when I was trying to take it away from her she growled at me. I thought this was a bit strange so I decided to see if she would do it with her food. This is the first time I fed her in my home and I proceeded to stroke her back while she was eating to see if she would growl. Well she did. Is this normal behavior?
2. She was chewing on a toy when my cat came up and my cat sniffed her and she growled at my cat. Is this normal?
I know she came from a breeder with 2 litters of puppies (4 in one litter and 7 in another litter) I'm just not sure if this normal behavior or something I should be concerned about. She is my first puppy ever and I've done a lot of research on the breed, but I've never came across people having a puppy with resource guarding, especially so young.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Mine does the same thing, he is my third husky and the only one to ever resource guard. He was the runt of the litter, so what I concluded is that he was picked on by his other litter mates and was the last to get food so now he feels he needs to stand up for himself when it comes to food.
I have been hand feeding him since I got him. While feeding him I work on the leave it cue and the focus cue and any other ones I feel necessary during feeding. He has come a long way, doesn't growl at the water bowl any more and will still growl with his food if he is surprised.
I understand that you don't always have time to hand feed, so when I don't have time, I send him to his bed, I make him sit and wait, I put his food bowl in there, tell him to focus, close the door and then give him the okay to eat. This way he feels more secure because no one or anything can come and take his food away. Once he is done, I remove his bowl and I let him out.
It's been a back and forth battle with us, he trusts me but he does not trust my husband when it comes to food because my husband doesn't feed him. If I were you, I would start with hand feeding, build that trust between the two of you and make sure you control each and every one of her feeding times. If that means you sit there with her and hand feed so no one else can steal her food, or putting her in her crate so she is secure and there is no threat to her.

I had also posted something similar a while back under the heading "Food Aggression/Possession when eating from bowl". Take a look and read all the comments under there. I explained my situation and what I was doing to reverse the aggression (it was very badly worded because I was frustrated, sorry) and there are some responses on there that I think you would find super beneficial to your situation and they explained what I was doing better than I could explain it myself. haha. It was a bad day.
Anyway, check that one out, I think it will help you out.

Absolutely take this seriously. I have just taken in a 6 yr old that was headed for euthanasia if this could not be controlled. The poor dog is now confined to crate 24/7 except for multiple training walks throughout the day.

Please, please, please. Address this now, while you have a young dog. When my son's dog Archer came here at 4 months, we could not take his food bowl or bone, I had to have him tethered while feeding - he would steal my boy's dinner and growl if anyone came close. We nipped that in the bud by hand feeding exclusively - we now can reach down, take his bone or food and he responds to drop it. It was relatively simple as a young pup. With this 6 year old, I'm somewhat pessimistically hopeful.

I got nothing else to add beyond what has been suggested already, but please try your best to work with ms.puppy. It is very important to do it while she is young.

Here's my story.
My boy Mylo was real bad with his food bowl as a younger pup...getting near him=growl and of course all that automatically meant attack mode for anything else near him. I had enough of it and started recording every eating session while hand feeding him, these trials went on for a while. After he became comfortable with me being near his food, giving him the command to wait and take it for his meals became a routine and thankfully he got the hang of it. That is what I did with my boy...but of course all dogs are different.

How is he now? 2yr old Mylo patiently waits and sits until I tell him to 'take it'..
The longest I every made him wait was a full 5 minutes, but that was when the "training trials" were going on. Surely, I found a way control his behavior but that is not to say that he is 100% food resource guard free. He eats alone in his little corner in the room. He isn't good with anyone other than me or my gf around him while he eats.
