PostSubject: Is she a Siberian Husky?   Is she a Siberian Husky? EmptyThu Jul 06, 2017 11:21 am

Hi! I recently adopted the sweetest most lovable pup (her name is Shadow), and some people think she may be a mix and not pure breed.  I've been told she is much calmer than a typical husky as well - maybe that's why people are curious. Since I get asked all the time, I was wondering what some more experienced husky owners thought? I tried to look up her markings, she has a cream/white undercoat with black tips, as well as some really pretty copper fur on the bottom of her paws, her elbows and hind legs.

The shelter I adopted her from didn't know much about her, and thought she may be about 2 years old.

Hi MoonSadow and Shadow!  Pretty pup you have there.  I hope you don't mind, I edited your message to bring the pictures in-line in your message.

Factually, it's obvious that she's older, let's say, than 1.5 years.  By then all growth pates will be closed - and Shadows forelimbs appear to me to be closed - meaning she's not going to get any taller, she may however get heavier as her bulk (muscle mass) increases.
(Explanation: in a young dog there would be an obvious "bump" just above her "ankles" that are responsible for leg growth.  Since there are no visible bumps there, it's safe to assume she's stopped growing and it's safe to assume that she's at least 1.5-2 years old.)

Activity levels are really dependent on a couple of things.  The dogs own personality is one and the activity level of the owner is another.  I'm a very layed back (at 70, I'd better be!) and relaxed person and my dogs generally, are very relaxed and calm.

Some dogs are "in your face, let's go!" from puppyhood and others simply don't appear to care.  If you're lazing around, it's a safe bet your pup will be also.  If you're super active and meet with friends who are also, it's a safe bet that your dog will be considerably more active (than mine ...)

And finally, the response to your question, the ONLY way to actually determine whether she's a "real husky" or not would be a DNA test (and even those would probably show other breeds as well). She looks about as much like a Husky as I'd want to see, so I'd say yeas, she's either a 100% Husky or real close.

Thanks, newbie mistake. Would you say she is a siberian husky though? (based on her presentation)

I realized I hadn't answered that so while you were typing I went back and edited my response. Yep, I'd say she is.

You would be surprised how many people think a husky is mixed just cuz they have brown eyes instead of blue and even more so when they are bi-eyed . I'm blown away sometimes by it. Your pup looks full husky to me.

Posted in two spots. I replied on the other thread about ears. She does have a narrow face, doesn't necessarily mean anything, she could be pure. If you saw some other dogs when you went to meet the parents though and know what their breeds are we could potentially expand on the likelihood of purity. Most likely though just looking at her I would say pure.

Black and whites can produce an all white pup. Some are black points and some will be liver points, your pup appears to be a black point. Also blue eyes is a husky trait, not seen in malamutes for example. Puppies are hard to know 100% since they are growing and coat coloration changes a lot in the first year. For now I say she is a pure and a lovely puppy.
