Scared of men? Empty
PostSubject: Scared of men?   Scared of men? EmptySat Sep 02, 2017 2:00 am

So, lately I've run into a weird issue with Finley. She is so afraid of any man she meets. I take her to the dog park every day and she loves everyone there! (even the men) and she is fine running up and kissing on any guy at the park with no issues. However if we are out walking, at the store, or a man comes into my house she freaks out. She will jump into my lap and cry and if they come near her she runs away and kind of huffs and puffs, then she starts barking at them. I can't figure out what the issue is because as far as I know, no man has ever done anything to her. Also, its not any particular trigger like a hat, beard, etc. Any guy comes around and she's a totally different dog. At first I thought maybe it was being on the leash but its since happened off leash (like in the house) so I don't know what to do! She wont come near them even if they have treats or toys...nothing works. I'm at a loss!

Megan, this may sound odd but I wouldn't be overly concerned Fin's still young (I think) and unusual things / people are apt to cause unusual responses.

Pups tend to be a lot like children, the more you try to coerce them into uncomfortable situations, the less likely they are to adapt well - they rebel.

Given time she should become more accepting .... I'd just keep presenting her with the unusual and eventually she'll adjust.

Scared of men? Empty
PostSubject: Re: Scared of men?   Scared of men? EmptySun Sep 03, 2017 10:05 pm

My last female husky was a very strong, independent little girl who I had zero issues with the entire time I had her. Except for one. She didn't like my older brother. She would know he was here before he even came to the door. She was an extremely quiet dog, who I only heard woo woo's out of, but if my brother was around, she would yip...non stop...until she would hear his car drive away. Nothing I did could stop her from doing that yipping. She passed away four years ago now, and at one of my families get togethers, the subject came up. My father thought the explanation was that my brother makes ME tense, and Anuschka was sensing that in me. I actually do find some truth to that, as when I was younger, I had an Alaskan malamute growing up who also behaved differently when my brother was around, he would stay glued to my side and if he felt me getting upset with my brother for any reason, would actually lay his head on me and almost use it like a weight, to keep me from getting up. So anyways, you mention seeing men on your walks, maybe it's possible Finley senses you getting a little "guarded" or something? I know when I walk mine, if someone else is coming in our direction, I pull them in closer to me because I'm guarded on how the other dog/s are going to behave once they are closer to us. I imagine she is fine with the men at the dog park, because she is more at ease there, and even you are more at ease there. With Anuschka, I hadn't even known or felt my brother might be making me tense up, but when my dad said it, I could see it actually maybe being the case. Can't say it's the case for Finley or not, you would have to sit down and think about all the scenarios you described and see if it applies at all, but just wanted to offer up this possibility.
