PostSubject: Newbie Needs Alot Of HELP! lol.    Newbie Needs Alot Of HELP! lol. EmptyTue Dec 11, 2018 3:02 pm

Just purchased my first Siberian husky 4 days ago. He was born September 7 2018. He follows me around all through the my room and living room, but when I go to pet him or get to close he runs away then comes right back lol.
I can't put a collar on him without him running away
Can't get him to go outside
My girlfriend unfortunately introduced him to the pee pads. So he's pees very often then he will step right in it and put pee paws everywhere
He poops on the pad but walks around the pad as he poops for some odd reason. Then he puts his nose in it and steps in that also and tracks it all over the floor.
He doesn't mind going into the crate and he sits when I tell him I guess thoes are 2 positives

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME
I'm located in Maryland of anyone wants to help me train or anything

Put him on a leash connected to you.
Have him connected to you all the time he isn't in his crate.
Every time he lifts his leg, take him outside and reward him for peeing.
This takes a lot of work, but it will work out.

+1 to jalepeno's advice above.

Re: getting a collar on him- Get a HIGH VALUE treat (hot dog, piece of chicken etc) in one hand and collar in the other. When he comes to get the treat, gently move the collar close to him and let him have the treat.

Progress to where you have the collar adjusted so that it will easily slip over his head and hold the treat to where he has to put his head through the collar to get it.

Re: potty- We *knocking on wood* are at about 90% in training our two huskies to poop and pee in one spot in the yard. It's probably taken 2-3 months of constant work. They were usually locked in my office with me and EVERY time I left, I'd take them to the potty area (with a high value treat in my pocket) and reward them if they went. Also got up with them every night at least once.

You pup is only 3 months old, so don't expect him to be able to hold it very long. It'll happen but it'll take consistency on your part.

Great advice dvflyer,

Puppies at that age typically need to potty every 1 to 2 hours, and even once or twice in the middle of the night. I would highly recommend getting used to taking your pup outside every hour and a half or so for just about 10 minutes at a time. If he goes GREAT!, reward him with a small treat and head back inside, if he doesn't that's alright just try again in an hour. Great thing about starting potty training young is you don't need to go on long walks until they "get it". Maintain positive control on your puppy inside, like jalepeno said, on leash and limit their ability to roam around. If you live in an apartment, "only reason I think you have pads", then repeat the same steps above but in front of the pads. Try to be as boring as possible so the pup doesn't get distracted, then once he goes move him away from the spot so he doesn't play with it.

Any young puppy can be trained this way, it's just a matter of training ourselves to be patient, best of luck!

Yes that is difficult and I have had that same problem in the past. Turns out that even though we would clean the area our pup went in, the scent was still present and strong which encourages the puppy to go again in the same areas. In addition to cleaning the accident we invested in some deodorizers and ended up limiting the puppies access to that area for a few days.

There is a great reference on the subject that I follow religiously from Zak George. I would post a link to it here but I haven't finished reading the rules of the forum yet. If you just do a search of "Potty Training Your Puppy with Zak George" you should be able to find it though.

I'm no expert and to be honest I am here for the same reason, I need help too. I was wondering if moving a pee pad outside might help. Thoughts?

Pee pads may need to be picked up and tossed if you don't want him to go on them.

(I like the idea of moving them outside)

If he's not into treats, you'll have to find something he DOES like so you can reward him.  Maybe just a "GOOD DOG!" type of thing.

Dogs will generally not pee or poop where they sleep.  Keep in him in his crate anytime he's not tied to you or your girlfriend.

First thing in the morning and/ or after he eats, take him outside and wander around with him for 15 minutes (set your phone timer... 15 minutes of waiting for a dog to pee is a LONG time).  Have a treat or be ready to make a big deal out of him going in case he pees or poops.  If he doesn't go, bring him back in the house and put him in his crate.  Try again in a 20 minutes or so.  The idea is to catch him doing something good so you can reward him.

This may take days or it may take much longer... let that sink in for a minute.

Lastly, I'm sure there are numerous trainers in your area who can come by and help square things away.  Private lessons aren't cheap but might be just what you need.

I personally never believe in pee pads. It may seem like an easy and convenient fix at first, but at the end of the day when your dog grows older a pee pad will no longer suffice or hold the amount of urine/poop than can come out of an adult husky.

You're eventually going to have to transition your dog off pee pads, and let me tell you, while there are teething pains right now as a puppy, it will be infinitely more difficult to train them off of it when they grow older.

I would get rid of them now, and just spend the next two weeks dealing with the accidents. By having pee pads in the house, you're confusing the dog by letting them pee inside, but you get excited and happy as well when they pee outside? Just doesn't make sense.

-Frequent leashed focused poty trips outside
-Reward based training for voiding outdoors
-Using an animal enzyme/urine cleaner after accidents
-crate training

...Are keys to success. This topic has been discussed at length throughout this forum. Do a quick search for more in depth discussions to the above listed points.

Good luck everyone!
