Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

A friend sent me this but I can't bear to watch it. It's about the mistreatment of dogs used in the Iditarod and other sled competitions.

There's a page to send a protest email to the corporations that sponsor it.

Yeah its depressing and it sucks but its not any different for race horses or ranch horses that end up at the dog food factory in la jara when they are no longer useful. Or the premarin mares in Canada. And my county is trying to make a law that requires a 10 ft chain and shelter of some sort current law only requires a 3 ft chain and no shelter. Looked at the synopsis made me think of blackfish which destroyed SeaWorld. Maybe this will destroy commercial dog sledding but i doubt it. As long as animals are viewed as a commodity bad things happen. I worked in horse racing the movie cant be much worse then the backside of the track.

I don't think that's a lot different from growing up on a farm plenty of years back. A decent racer (horse or dog) knows that if he doesn't keep the animals in some kind of decent health he's gonna lose. Does that mean that every racer is good? You and I both know the answer to that ... all we have to do is remember Whistler BC, but just a not every racer is good, not every musher is bad either.

We've been able to forget the days in our past when we ate veal - simply because there were more calves than we could use or sell ... is that abuse?? And the pretty little cuddly bunny rabbit that ends up on the dinner table. We Americans have forgotten that the hamburger we eat used to be a cow (hopefully); ditto the chicken fingers used to be a living hen/rooster - we've been able to step away, generally speaking, from the realities of meat production.

If the primary contact for that group wasn't PETA, I might have looked closer ... but I wear a leather belt and leather shoes/boots so PETA and I start off on the wrong foot right there.

I can proudly say i know where everything in my freezer was raised/slaughtered and processed but i agree with america becoming disconnected with where food comes from. Not so much where i live it's a big cattle bison area. Im also in open range area so i have livestock where my yard isnt fenced all the time. Cows are cute and they taste good. On a side note we have amish puppymills nearby and the same thing happens to those dogs when they become unprofitable. Its PETA made? Im surprised alf didnt go and let the dogs loose
Sometimes i think peta is just a pr platform for alf. Good movie about good intentions gone bad is the dog lover
