Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

My new Alusky Empty
PostSubject: My new Alusky   My new Alusky EmptyTue May 07, 2019 4:57 pm

Hi folks,

This is my first 'husky' (actually a husky/malamute mix or alusky). I was looking specifically for a dog who could join me for daily trail runs of 12-20k, and for hikes of 20-40k and, if possible, for mountain biking (although I know huskies are not great off leash so my pup might not be able to get into this activity). Also a dog who has a high prey drive for doing Search and Rescue work.

I had told a friend who trains police and military dogs that has been keeping an eye out for a pup that would fit my requirements. Two weeks ago, I was told about a pup who had been shifted rapidly between two homes (don't get me started on people who get a dog and don't understand it's physical needs and temperament) and was not doing well (anxiety, tail chewing). I went to see him and took him in three days later.

I named him Kodi (as in Kodiak). So far we've simply spent as much time together bonding through play (tug o war), and long walks (play walks where he can stop, sniff, etc). He's 10 months old in two weeks from yesterday (Monday May 6th). We've also done a ton of socializing work with people, of all ages and cultural/linguistic backgrounds and all sorts of animals: rabbits, geese, ducks, small, medium and big dogs (male and female). He's been utterly stellar with all of them (really quite shocking). I believe this is probably due to his malamute temperament (he's less husky like and more malamute like in temperament). I love him so much and can't wait until he's 18 months old so I can start him in a 'dog, couch to 5k training plan'

We used to have a fairly active member who did SAR with their husky. It was a lot of work but seemed to be going successfully.
