| It's been a while, since I have been on, so hello again!
In July while we're were on a quick walk, Lykaios started limping. We have him rest for a few days, as there was not outward sign if injury. I could tell it was his knee that was the issue. We ran to the vet as it was not better and he did some manipulation/testing and felt his knee was too loose , that he had a probable partial CCL tear. We did crate rest for a month with no benefit. We made an appointment with our primary vet, who is also the local Ortho surgeon. She wanted x Ray's that day. We were not prepared for the report of osteosarcoma. Even our vet was in disbelief. His distal femur was totally destroyed. It was Friday afternoon, and she was going to be out of town until Tuesday, so surgery was scheduled then for a total amputation.
Day of surgery she re x-rayed him and she could see a pathological fracture, though he showed no worsening of his minor limp. We chose to do chemotherapy. He ends these treatments on Tuesday the 22. (He turned 7 last week!) As of 2 weeks ago, ling x-rays are still clear.
Anyone with experience in this, I would appreciate anything you found that helps. He is running around like nothing ever happened. He continues to wrestle full force with his Dane sister. I am so afraid since the diagnosis was so delayed and it went long enough to cause a path fracture, that our time is almost over. His personality is changing a bit, he has never been that close with my 11 year old Dane, but now he cuddles with him as often as he can, it is his preferred resting spot.
He doesn't show pain well, I am not convinced I won't put him through more than I should simply because he won't let me in on his secret. How did you know?

| I have no experience with osteosarcoma in dogs. The best I can say is I'm sorry your guy had this diagnosis. Enjoy the time you have, none of us know what tomorrow will bring. Today is what we've got.
As for what to watch for, I would imagine general signs of illness, lots of appetite, reduction in energy, difficulty with pee/poop, shortness of breath, coughing. It's tough with dogs...my guy is being treated for Lyme disease, I didn't realize the loss of energy until now it's being treated. I though just older more settled. Now I'm back to needing to supervise so he doesn't dog the back yard, the couch, shred the pillows. Zoomies at 2 AM... |
