Food for loose stools Empty
PostSubject: Food for loose stools   Food for loose stools EmptyThu Apr 30, 2020 10:56 am

Anyone have a recommendation for dog food for dogs with chronically loose stools? Feeding Repede has always been an issue...he is very prone to allergies and GI upset.

When he was around 3 we put him on TOTW grain free, salmon flavored and I think that's the best he has ever been. I would supplement with fish oil to help his coat but in general his stools were more firm. A few months ago when we went to order his food, his normal food was out but they had the same flavor in high protein + ancient grains. With all of the reports about grain free food, we figured it was a good time to switch anyways. Since then, his stools have been consistently loose. Not quite diarrhea as he is able to hold it and it has some consistency, but not a lot (maybe 3.5 using Waltham scoring). I was hoping by now it would get better, but nope. I noticed it firms up if I give him canned pumpkin, but once I stop, it goes right back to being loose. He is due for his yearly exam in a couple of months and we will be doing our normal tests, but timing definitely makes me think it's his food and not anything medical.

Anyone have any good high quality food recommendations without chicken? I see so many and I dont know where to start. I've considered going back to grain free because he honestly did so well on it, but I will admit those reports made me worry and I just want him to live a long, healthy life. And even on the grain free, his stools were never consistently hard enough to express his anal glands (I'd say it was typically between 2.5 and 3 using Waltham scoring), but since he was otherwise doing great on it, we didnt want to change.

Essence ranch and meadow is chicken free. They also have a l.i.d that is legume free and basically grain free (gluten free(quinoa))

Purina? Or if his stomach is that sensitive then making his food for him might be the way to go. Something like a mix of:

-Olive oil or fish oil
-Oatmeal
-Ground turkey or fish with eggs
-Veggies like spinach, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, green beans, sweet potato, or pumpkin

Raw feeding is another possibility but I know nothing about it.

Have you asked your vet what they would recommend?

Try purina maybe it will work, they also make a grain free. If you go home made there would be no reason for oatmeal and also some types of fish can be toxic in large amounts.

Go! Solutions has a salmon GF recipe that might be worth a try. I've had fantastic luck with the brand and my allergy prone dogs. Or look for the TOTW Prey line if he did well but still was soft even on the normal TOTW. He may have a potato issue. I can't feed chicken or potato to any of mine. As for the GF reports. I would not read too much into them. There are too many variables at this time for them to definitively say that GF is the issue with the dogs being reported. Many are also being self reported by owners and not vets who have gone through extensive steps to rule that GF and not a myriad of other things is the culprit. Huskies as they were being developed were not bred in the grain belt and grains were not a main staple of their diet, so they do not have the same amount of enzymes in their digestive system to process grains the way some other breeds do. If you wish to go the home cooked route get yourself a food scale and get into the facebook group (if you have fb) homecooked diets for dogs. They have a beautiful files section on the proper way to balance a homecooked meal for dogs. It must be balanced with meats, organs, and your extras. If you do not balance homecooked just right you will destroy your dog's health. Same with raw. You must balance it. I will say though, a properly balanced raw or cooked diet can do wonders for allergy prone dogs.

Have you tried lamb recipes? My vet told me lamb is easier to digest and could help if your dog is having GI issues. A friend of mine has a pup that is also alergic to chicken and other things, but a grain free lamb recipe has helped her dog tremendously.

Mine are on a chicken and beef free blend of Lamb, goat, pork, boar. Mine like lamb alot. I have a german shepherd that i thought had a chicken allergy and now i think its a anything with feathers allergy. He got a magpie and had the same reaction he had to both chicken, turkey and duck. We did earthborn lamb for awhile. We also did a rabbit based food for awhile. It really cant hurt to try a lamb blend.

My dad swore by purina one lamb and rice. My uncle who is a vet feeds his proplan. Mine got purina until spider came along with her specific needs, she has major gi issues.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! We havent fully decided what to buy yet but there is a strong possibility we will go back to the previous food even though it was GF.

And to an earlier question, we haven't talked to his vet yet but that will definitely be part of the conversation in a couple of months if this isnt better by then.

My puppy with GI issues is doing well on square egg by square pet.  We tried prescription foods from our vet, lots of different brands from the natural pet store, and raw.  For us this was the first kibble that allowed us to move off pumpkin, rice and baked chicken. https://www.mysquarepet.com/canine-square-egg/
