To travel or not to travel Empty
PostSubject: To travel or not to travel   To travel or not to travel EmptyThu Jul 28, 2011 10:09 pm

Hi, going out of town for a few hours this weekend, first time leaving dog alone for a while. I will be gone for about 5 hours in the afternoon around 10-5. I was wondering should I bring the dog? The ride is only a hour long but will be at my brothers for a couple of hours then a hour ride back. I have a crate but can I just sit her in the crate for 5 hours in the middle of the day or should I take her? I know if I put water in her bowl she will make a mess and tip it over and who knows how crazy she will get in there. She does sleep fine in the crate at night.

Thanks,

I think she should be ok. I work 9am-almost 5pm so my 2 stay alone for about 8-9hrs during the week. Kody is in his crate and he's just fine. Mya used to stay in her crate also, but she started being a good girl when she turned about 3yrs old.

If you've never left her alone she might have a bit of separation anxiety or be just fine.

Of course if you can take her then I would if she won't be too much of a hassle to deal with =)

A 5 month old should be okay for 5 hours I would think. I think the general rule is that they should be able to hold it 1 hour for each month of age.

Or you could take her with her crate, that will give her some more socialization and potty breaks, but then it also means more of your attention will be spent on her. Either option I think is doable.

She is in over night, about 8 hours was the max, she goes in the crate when we eat, so thats about 30 mins, when we leave to the store its about an hour. But never over 2 during the day.

My brother is ok with it but he says she has to stay outside, but its an outside party so doesnt bother me, I think the kids will love her, kids always want to pet her on our walks.

personally, i'd just bring her with..but if you don't want to i'm sure she'd be fine in the kennel for 5 hours. i leave mine alone from 5pm-12am 5 nights a week in their kennels and they're fine Smile

My girls went everywhere when possible. They were crated when they were younger and couldn't go. In fact Shadow was only about 9 months old when she flew cross country with me (I really wish they had frequent flyer programs for dogs). Stormy goes with me a lot, but when he can't I leave him in the kitchen with a pee pad.
