Have any of you used the coconut oil? We just bought some for our dogs and wondered if anyone else used it.

I heard that it's great to put on their noses when they get dry spots.

The lady at the pet boutique said that it is good for hot spots and it has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. The research I have done confirms this. I started them on it today. The little ones for now.

She, and the research, says that it helps with allergies, so I'm crossing my fingers. I gave some to Kya too because she gets hot spots sometimes.

I give my boys anchovy or salmon oil in the morning and coconut oil at night on their dry food. It's a great energy source and has really helped their coats.

It is high in fat, but it can help with metabolism and coat. My girl can't handle very much - it makes her so runny, and with my boy, I used it in small quantities because I didn't know how much was too much when he was overweight. Now, I put some on my boy's nose when it gets dry and my girl has to have some too because whatever he gets she has to also have Wink

Make sure it is virgin coconut oil - so it'll be a solid, but will easily melt in the palm of your hand.

Yes, it is in a jar, a solid, and i was told to just start them on a tiny bit and work up to the full dose every day.

I've been thinking about trying it for my pups too. How do you know how much to give them?

Start out with 1/4 tsp first. If they do OK with that amount, you can increase it by another 1/4 tsp. Remember, it's high if fat so too much could cause a weight gain. A little goes a long way for the pups.

I'll have to grab a tub sometime soon and try it then. A pound or two might even be good for Ava...

Yeah, we were advised for our little poms a taste off our finger, then increase it as tolerated.

The "standard" amount is one teaspoon per 10 pounds. I probaby wont give them very much though. One of our dogs already has shown improvement with her weepy eye and our allergy boy has stopped itching. You can rub it on hot spots, or rashes as well to stop the itching.

Kya has stopped licking her paws as well. I thought I would never get her to stop that!

I have organic, pure, extra virgin coconut oil and I use it for myself also - after taking a shower, before you towel off, use coconut oil to moisturize your skin, I use it to cook with also!

Coconut Oil?? Empty
PostSubject: Re: Coconut Oil??   Coconut Oil?? EmptyThu Apr 05, 2012 1:21 pm

I use coconut oil for my dogs, definitely use the cold-pressed, extra virgin coconut oil. It has a lot of health benefits but I mainly use it for my dogs' skin and coat, the rest is just an added bonus and you don't have to worry about mercury build up like you do with a lot of fish oils.

What's interesting about coconut oil is that it can help a skinny dog put on weight and also help an overweight dog to trim down. Kind of like how pumpkin can help relieve both diarrhea and constipation, they both kill two birds with one stone so to speak. How it works is that coconut oil is very high in fat which can help put weight on a thin dog but it also speeds up the metabolism which can result in helping a heavy dog thin down a bit. But bearing this in mind, that is why it is recommended to keep dosages on the smaller side.

I personally never measure how much coconut oil I give my dogs, I just scoop out a little bit into their bowls a few times a week. I'd guestimate that my sibe only gets maybe 1/2 a teaspoon at most, if that. I also use my coconut oil to cook a lot of my own food with, it has health benefits for us people too!
