| Not mine, the dog's.
Anyone have experience with this? I've smelt plenty of bad dog breath, but this is different. It's very metallic and smells just like urine. We brush her teeth and she has plenty of good things to chew on like antlers and uncooked bones. Her teeth aren't perfect, but we've been told many times they're way better than most husky teeth.
I've read it can be sign of kidney damage, but she's been to the vet and they said she's in perfect health. We've only had her for a year, and she's always been a fairly mellow dog. I wouldn't really call it lethargic though because you can get her to snap out of it instantly when you bring up walks, treats or even just start calling her name. I think she's just lonely and wants a playmate (which we're working on).
She drinks a lot of water and pees a lot on walks, but it's in more of a marking way. She has no problem holding her bladder for 9 hrs while we're at work. |

| We also have a female Husky who's been spayed and we noticed that she would often be cleaning herself down there and she'd have urine smelling breath. Well once I checked to see what all the fuss was about and you could see urine dribbling (!). We knew it wasn't because she didn't have access to the outside because there's someone at home most of the time. Got her checked at the vet and finally we got her on "Stilbestrol" which is an estrogen replacement hormone. Seems it's fairly common for female huskies who've had a hysterectomy to lose some capability to maintain their natural hormone levels. As a result, urinary incontinence (because of the ensuing weak muscle control in the bladder's sphincter) and even behavior changes are a consequences (although the behavior changes may be mostly due to the embarrassment of soiling one's sleeping area - which happened fairly often at nite). Anyway for us, the problem is gone and we give the pill every week or so to maintain her levels.
Good luck. |
