PostSubject: What does your dog do all day? (with you at home)   What does your dog do all day? (with you at home) EmptyTue Jan 31, 2017 5:06 pm

We just adopted 7 month old Blaise. She's a great pup! We had a puppy a couple years ago who died after she was just a year old (ate a sock) and we have a 4 year old Maltese, so Blaise isn't our first dog but she's kind of our first "normal" dog.

Our Maltese is a very lazy lap dog and lays around all day. The puppy we had before was a very wild puppy and we were still very much in the training process with her, crating her when we couldn't watch her, etc.

We've only had Blaise a few days now so we're still learning each other, but she's a good girl. We keep her tethered in the living room, which is where we usually are.

We are a homeschooling family (I have 10 year old triplets) so we are home most of the day. We can easily take breaks to walk her or let her run around in the backyard, etc. These breaks seem to tire her out and then she just sleeps after that.

I'm just curious what most dogs do during the day when you're home with them. So far we have crated her while we actually "do school." But I think she'd probably just lay in the school room with us, sleeping. What I don't want is for her to get up and roam and then I feel like I have to go and follow her since I'm not 100% she'll stay out of trouble.

I don't think I need to feel guilty for crating her during school, since it's really not much time at all and she gets so many breaks, but I'd also like to have her out as much as possible.

Do dogs really just sleep a ton during the day? Sometime's she'll chew on a toy for a little, but not for too long.

Mine sleep most of the day whether I'm there or not. They will chew on an antler if they get a little bored. If I don't walk them early enough then they will pace and pester me until I do. I don't crate mine (8 years old and 6 years old) so they will play with each other occasionally.

I'm retired so home most of the time. My eldest female goes out in the morning and then wants back in and lays around - under foot of course. My other two go out and stay out most of the day. Sometimes they play by them selves, sometimes with each other and sometimes with a neighbor dog who comes over just to socialize - most of the time they're napping.

I homeschool also and am home most of the day as well. Our sibe sleeps all day. He prefers to be with people (mostly me) and will usually sleep wherever he can be with his people. Your little one is a puppy so will probably be more active for a while yet. Both of my dogs like to be within viewing distance of where we are.

Our sibe likes to spend a lot of time outside, he'll often spend hours outside lounging in the yard. He comes and goes as he pleases since we are home to let him in and out. Of course my boy is older and trustworthy outside unsupervised.

Can you put up gates to keep her in a certain area without crating or tethering?

We could put gates up to keep her in the school room with us. Gating the living room would be harder, which is why we tether in there.

Do you think gates are better than tethering? If so, why?

We also do have a good fenced in yard. She loves to tear around it. Hopefully we will get to the point where we might try leaving her out there for bits of time too if she likes it!

I think they both have their place. Gates are nicer when you are in a room as you stated. For larger open spaces like a family room where gates are not practical I think tethering can be a better option. We have done it all, crates, baby gates & tethering over the years as the situation called for it.

I don't know how relevant this is for you because our pup is much younger and has a ton of energy. If you're tiring your pup out consistently, I'm sure you're doing enough for her. Tiring Juno out takes a lot of effort! Haha.

I'm a law student, but my schedule is really flexible, so I'm home with Juno most days. Our days are pretty crazy. My husband gets up earlier than I do, so he gives Juno breakfast at 7 am. Juno stays by himself in his pen until around 9 am, when I take him out for a 30-min walk in our yard. Then I let him hang out in our living room, watching him constantly and taking him out for potty breaks. That lasts until 11ish, when I put him back in his pen to get a little break. At 12 I give him lunch. Then I get him ready to go out, and we go to puppy playtime from 1-2. After we get home from that he goes back in his pen for a few hours. He usually gets another walk in the afternoon. Dinner is at 6. Then we eat dinner. We'll let him hang out with us a little after that. By 8 he's back in his pen and he goes to sleep for the night at 9.

Our Siberian is almost 12 months old now, she pretty much is super lazy all day with my wife at home. I didn't believe it until I worked from home one day - she has most of her energy first thing in the morning and then late at night - go figure.

My boy is 6mos and starting to mellow out. He used to be a crazy ball of fur with endless energy and a sassy, bitey mouth, but he's gotten much better. Now he just brings me toys, chews on his toys, naps, and occasionally sniffs or tries to lick the cats. He likes to sit or lay down next to me on the couch and stay there, for the most part. If I get up, he gets up. If I leave the gated room, he sits at the gate and waits for me. If I walk toward the front door, whether I'm going out or not, he picks up a toy and tries to bring it outside with him. I've started letting him so I can teach him to go get it and bring it back.

My Zelda is only 7 months and I've had her since she was 8 weeks. When I'm out (afternoons into the evening) she stays in her play pen and usually sleeps and plays with some puzzle toys. When I'm home, I let her roam around the house. She doesn't roam though....she just naturally stays in a close vicinity to me. When I lay down, she'll bring me toys and I'll toss them around with her and she'll eventually lay down with me and cuddle, then knock out by my feet. I take her to bed in her play pen by 9-10. She doesn't cause much mischief and really just wants to be around someone as often as possible lol.
