Acana and anal glands Empty
PostSubject: Acana and anal glands   Acana and anal glands EmptyMon Jul 23, 2012 12:50 am

After the TOTW recall, I switched my two girls to Acana food. My older husky, Ava, (aprox 8 years old) is having issues with her anal glands. In the year or so that I have had her, I have taken her to the vet about four times to get them expressed. This situation became evident once I switched her to Acana. She has no other issues. Her poop is good but, I took her two weeks ago to the vet, had her anal glands expressed and she is still smelling. I haven't seen her drag her butt on the carpet but who knows...

Any suggestions? Do I need to add fiber to her diet? My 19 month-old female doesn't have any issues.

Thanks!

If she's only been on Acana since the recalls, that doesn't seem like enough time to connect it to the anal glands unless all 4 times they've needed expressing have been after she's been on Acana.

You say her poops are "good". Does that mean they are nice and firm? If they are firm, not soft, then usually they express themselves. However softer bm's are often not enough to naturally clear them. Added fiber can help if the current BM's are not firm. Also, some dogs are just more prone to the issue than others and need more frequent expression.

All four times have been after she started eating Acana. Her BMs are firm. She's never had that issue before in the almost two years that I've had her. I'm just wondering if there is a connection.
