Mucus in the Poopy! Empty
PostSubject: Mucus in the Poopy!   Mucus in the Poopy! EmptyWed Aug 08, 2012 8:30 pm

Well this has certainly been an interesting week for Ms. AddieMae! Poor thing.

This previous weekend I had to go out of town for an interview for a new position and I left her with her best friend Harley (a pomeranian/yorkie mix). Poor Addie had a fit of separation anxiety and broke out of her kennel and decided to eat a whole bag of dog treats that weren't the healthiest and in excess quantity.

After a night or two of vomiting and diarrhea she apparently was fine and didn't have any mood changes (these notes from Harley's mother...who won't be watching Addie again).

Then my dear sweet darling was left in my room, with the door shoot and out of her kennel. She pooped on my bed (pay back I suppose) and then decided to tunnel out from under my door. She was successful until she reached the foundation of the apartment building. She managed to scrap away a bit of concrete but the efforts were clearly futile.

Note: I am impressed though because she didn't attempt to break through the door, which she easily could have done. Instead she did the logical thing and tunnel out (must remember to make a sandbox for her at some time)

When I got back I gave her lots of love and attention and she was in a great mood, but still had diarrhea and there were mucusy-flemlike additions to the stool.

Took her to the vet today and she apparently has an excess of bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria in her digestive track. This apparently can be caused by separation anxiety.

My mother said that she uses "field of flowers" to help with the separation anxiety? Anybody else have any suggestions? Its not just when I go away but also during the day. Any thoughts?

Picture is from today! She is a happy camper!

You can give her plain non fat yogurt (any brand as long as it has active/live cultures in the yogurt) to help her digestive tract. That should help settle her tummy a little.

As for seperation anxiety, there are a couple of things you could try to calm her. I'm hoping some of the members will chime in since I don't remember what they are, but they include supplements, or drops of some sort.

Also, I've heard a lot of positive things with the Thundershirt for anxieties, depending on how bad it is for her. And if you're interested in purchasing a Thundershirt, you can purchase one from:

Your purchase will also help the huskies in rescue!

Some non-medical options for separation anxiety include:
- Bach's Pet Rescue Remedy (Drops made out of a combination of soothing herbs you can put on treats)
- D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) available as a plug-in diffuser, collar, and spray (but seen the best results with the diffuser).
- Thundershirt as mentioned above
- Interactive toys and stuffed kongs, more for distraction or boredom diffuser than true separation anxiety
- Doing stuff like leaving a TV and light on so the house still feels occupied

A question though, does you dog usually do okay for normal amounts of alone time and this was the first time he was alone overnight? (You said you went out of town, so I'm assuming overnight) If she generally does fine alone for a few hours I wouldn't really say it's true separation anxiety and more she just isn't ready/used to that much alone time. You might want to hire someone to come walk her for an hour or board her or something. Then again, that's IF she's usually fine alone and this was just a really long time.

I use Bach's Rescue Remedy with Delilah - it calms her down. She can have little "panic attacks" at time and the it's god send.
