I just noticed Cato's incision looks like this Is neuter incision infected? Photobucket-1225-1347408073372

It was done Almost 4 weeks ago and the stitches are still there - they siad they were dissolvable. Do I clean the are out and cut out the stitches? i feel like they are causing the isssue. It's not the balls, its just swollen. I didn't even notice, but I was grooming him and I noticed something weird - I cut off as much fur as I could. What do I do?

4 weeks post I would feel comfortable cutting out the stitches and cleaning it up myself. Get some antibiotic on it and make sure he leaves it alone.

okay Kristina - I think I'll cut them out and hydrogen peroxide it - neosporin or just leave it to dry out?

I don't think he has been bothering it - i would be its due to the damn stitches.

I'm a fan of hydrogen peroxide and neosporin... If Cato were my dog that would be exactly what I'd do. If you still have the cone, I'd cone him after you clean it up just in case.

I am not saying anything but I was told neosporin for dogs, could be told wrong though. I went and got a dog ointment for them, and I would use some of that if you have it. Please let me know if neosporin is wrong to use or if it is okay.

My vet told me to use Neosporin when I got Lycus neutered as well. It also took him about 4 weeks to fully heal up, and all the swelling to go down. And as Kristina said, I would also suggest keeping the cone on. I also had the same thing happen with the stitches, although I just called my vet and took him in and they removed it for me.

Alright there were two small ones, I took care of them. I washed it down with doap and water and put neosporin on it. I'm not sure if it is totally safe - but I can't imagine its much different than the dog version. I may but ACV on it, to help it heal.

He is otherwise totally fine. You would have never known.

Great - he just licked some of the neosporin...Sad

I am not sure I would use peroxide. Dr tell most people these days not to use it one cuts to clean them because it kill all the bacteria. As good as that sounds, there is good bacteria that helps the healing process and it kills the good and the bad. I assume dogs heal the same as humans so I would be iffy with peroxide.

When we had my Cat fixed her got that way too. Her stitches didn't resolve as fast as the other cat we had fixed the same day. We ended up taking her to the vet an try just cut the stitches out and put some of the new skin glue type stuff I it just because it wasn't completely healed up and she did fine after that. The vet said it was probably the stitches causing it to not heal. Something about her body trying to fight the foreign object (the stitches) thr is neglected healing?? Idk something like that. Lol

See this a lot with our shelter dogs (most of them are neutered just a week or two before they come up to us from down south). At four weeks i woud have no problem taking the stitches out. Our usual procedure is to take out the sitiches, hydrogen peroxide (only initially, though, right after you remove the sitches. Kotabear is right, peroxide kills ALL bacetria. Good for an initial clensing, but if you keep applying it, it will slow the healing process), and just normal neosporin. So it sounds like your on the right track.....hope your boy clears up soon!

I's fine now - went to the vet, bitched up a storm because they didn't let me know they weren't dissolvable. Needless to say, I got some serious apologies and free stuff.

Just frustrating.
